KKR Return to Eden Gardens After Struggling Start, GT Aim for Playoffs

KOLKATA: The talk in Bengal is all about change right now, and Kolkata Knight Riders will be hoping that theme translates into results as they return to Eden Gardens for a home fixture after nearly a month. The three-time IPL title winners have had a difficult start to their season, collecting only one victory in their first four matches to kick off the campaign. They later staged a dramatic recovery by stringing together four straight wins, but a loss in their most recent outing against Royal Challengers Bengaluru has once again left them staring at the edge of elimination.

At this stage, KKR’s path to the playoffs looks far more like a numbers game than a practical one. Even if they win each of their final three matches—potentially lifting them to a maximum of 15 points—the equation may still not guarantee qualification. Their supporters will also need other results to fall in their favour across the tournament. Winning three games in a row also represents a significant challenge, with Gujarat Titans waiting next on Saturday.

The outcome of this contest is likely to carry heavier consequences for Gujarat than for KKR. A win for the Titans would not only secure their place in the playoffs, but also boost their chances of finishing inside the top two. Gujarat, meanwhile, have been operating like a well-prepared unit, with every role covered and plans tailored for different match situations. Even if KKR manage to keep a lid on Gujarat’s top-order batters, the Titans’ bowling attack has shown it can pressure batters consistently.

One of the clearest reminders came in their previous match, when they dismissed Sunrisers Hyderabad for just 86. Gujarat will arrive as favourites, riding the momentum of a five-match winning run. Shubman Gill, the former KKR batter, will be particularly eager to complete a “double” over his old franchise after Gujarat beat them by five wickets in the opening meeting nearly a month ago.

For KKR, it will be crucial to find a way to contain Gujarat’s in-form opening combination of Gill and Sai Sudharsan. The duo are among the leading run-scorers in the competition this season, repeatedly providing their side with strong starts and getting the innings moving early in most games. Even though he hasn’t been at his absolute best, Jos Buttler has still made valuable contributions from the next batting position and will be keen to return to a ground where he previously struck an unbeaten 107 off 60 deliveries for Rajasthan Royals in 2024.

KKR will also take heart from the way Washington Sundar scored 50 from the lower part of the order in the last match, since it could encourage the top three to play with more freedom. That said, Gujarat’s bowling depth is not something KKR can afford to treat lightly. Kagiso Rabada, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Jason Holder and Rashid Khan form a group with multiple ways to attack, giving them no obvious weakness.
