BCB to Hold Cricket Board Elections on June 7, EC Confirms Schedule

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) elections are set to be held on June 7, with the Election Commission confirming the timetable on Saturday, May 16. The process follows the dissolution of the Aminul Islam-led board by the National Sports Council, and it will be conducted by an interim administration led by Tamim Iqbal, who is serving as the interim head of the board.

Key takeaways

  • The next BCB election has been scheduled for June 7, after the Election Commission issued the official notice on May 16.
  • Tamim Iqbal is overseeing the interim BCB setup following the National Sports Council’s move to dissolve the previous leadership.
  • A draft voters’ list will be released on May 17, with objections and hearings scheduled over May 18 and May 19.
  • Nomination papers will be collected from the Returning Officer’s office in Mirpur on May 20 and May 21, and submissions close on May 21 and May 22.
  • Postal and e-ballots will be circulated between June 1 and June 6, with a strict cutoff of 1 pm on June 7 for returns.

Election timetable and voting logistics

The Election Commission’s notification was issued following the deadline for councillor nominations, which ended at 5 pm on May 16. The document was signed by Chief Election Commissioner Ahsanul Karim and sets out the full schedule for the voters’ list, nomination window, and voting day procedures.

As per the plan, the draft voters’ register will appear on the BCB website at 4 pm on May 17. The publication will be made from the BCB office in Mirpur. Councillors can submit objections to the draft list between 10 am and 4 pm on May 18, and hearings will be held during the same time range on May 19. The final voters’ list will then be published one hour later on May 19.

Interested candidates will be able to collect nomination forms from the Returning Officer’s office at the BCB headquarters in Mirpur between 10 am and 4 pm on May 20 and May 21. A non-refundable fee of Tk 20,000 will be required. Completed nomination papers must be submitted between 11 am and 5 pm on May 21 and May 22.

Postal and e-ballots, then final results

Alongside in-person voting, the election will also use a postal ballot system. Councillors will need to apply from their registered email addresses, sending their request to the designated email ID: [email protected], by midnight BST on May 25.

Between June 1 and June 6, postal ballots and designated e-ballots will be sent to voters at their current addresses. Completed postal ballots and e-ballots must reach the BCB office, or the relevant designated email address, by 1 pm on June 7. After that time, no ballots will be accepted.

Voting on June 7 will run from 10 am to 4 pm at the BCB Board Room at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Mirpur. The final outcomes are scheduled to be announced at 6 pm the same day from the office of the Chief Election Commissioner, following the completion of the counting process.

Election Commission composition and what it will decide

Earlier, on May 13, the BCB had announced the formation of the Election Commission for the BCB Board of Directors Election 2026. Ahsanul Karim, a Senior Advocate at the Bangladesh Supreme Court, will serve as the Chief Election Commissioner. The other two members named are Md. Israil Hawlader, Police Commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan Police, and A.B.M. Ehsanul Mamun, Deputy Secretary and Director (Planning & Development) at the National Sports Council.

The BCB stated that the Election Commission will oversee and conduct all necessary procedures for the BCB Board of Directors Election 2026 in line with the applicable rules and regulations.

The Election Commission is expected to publish the list of 192 councillors spread across three categories. Those councillors will then elect 25 directors to the board. The board’s structure is described as follows: 12 directors will be chosen by Dhaka club councillors (Category 2), 10 directors will be selected by regional and district councillors (Category 1), one director will come from other organisations such as public universities and former cricketers (Category 3), and two directors will be nominated by the National Sports Council.

Once the 25 directors are elected, they will go on to appoint the next BCB president. The interim chief, who is currently understood to be Tamim Iqbal, is reported to be keen on taking up the role permanently.
