Punjab Kings (PBKS) have shifted their focus entirely to their last outing of the IPL 2026 league phase after slipping to a defeat against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the afternoon match at the HPCA Cricket Stadium in Dharamsala. Even though PBKS showed promising spells during the contest, they failed to carry that momentum through the key phases, and several critical moments went against them at the most inconvenient times. The loss extended their losing run to a sixth straight game, leaving their playoff prospects hanging in the balance and now tied closely to net run rate and other results across the league. With only one match left in the regular season, Punjab Kings are positioned on 13 points. Their recent slump has taken a heavy toll on their standings, but they still retain a mathematical pathway to the playoffs as the tournament heads into the final week of the round-robin stage.
Defeat in Dharamsala leaves PBKS under pressure
PBKS’s afternoon setback to RCB came at a time when the franchise needed to protect its chances and build on strong stretches. While they managed to create periods of control, they could not sustain the momentum long enough to convert those phases into a decisive finish. The sixth consecutive loss not only dented their position on the table, but also increased their dependence on external match outcomes.

James Hopes: momentum swings decided the campaign
Fast bowling coach James Hopes identified the central issue behind Punjab Kings’ season as an inability to seize and maintain momentum during matches. He suggested that whenever PBKS looked set to take control, something would derail them, leading to the game slipping away in tight moments. In T20 cricket, he stressed, winning streaks can form quickly—but so can downturns, and Punjab Kings have experienced both extremes during the tournament.
“I think what derailed our campaign was an inability to take control of momentum in games. Every time we looked like doing it, we did something to hurt ourselves or trip ourselves up. T20 is a game where it is very easy to get on winning streaks, and it is very easy to go the other way. We have had both emotions in this tournament, and now we need a week to regroup the boys,” Hopes said.
Selection backed by balance and match-ups, says Hopes
Hopes also defended the team’s selection approach across the season, describing it as deliberate and shaped around balance and opposition-specific matchups. He explained that changes to the playing XI were planned carefully, with the aim of keeping a core structure intact—referencing Arshdeep, Chahal, and the team’s top four—while making adjustments around those pillars. However, he acknowledged that in the final few weeks, the strategy did not translate into the results they needed.
“Every change that we have made has been very measured. They have been thought out with the opposition in mind, and thought out with trying to keep our core structure like Arshdeep, Chahal, and our top four, and trying to make changes around them to complement what they do. It just has not worked out in the last few weeks, and that is the way this game goes sometimes,” he said.
Despite the disappointing run of results, the coach insisted that training standards and preparation levels remain strong. He pointed out that the players are working well and planning effectively, but that they have been unable to consistently convert those efforts into control during critical match situations. The immediate priority, according to Hopes, is to rebuild confidence and belief ahead of the final league game.
“The boys are training well, the boys are planning well. It is just that we get into moments where we get the game back our way, and right now it is just not happening. The boys have got to regroup, stay positive, and they have got to believe. At the moment, it is going to be about just instilling that belief back into them,” he added.
Final league match vs LSG: PBKS must regroup and hope for help
Looking ahead to the final fixture against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), Hopes admitted that PBKS are now reliant on other outcomes to keep their playoff chances alive. He also referenced missed opportunities earlier in the season—opportunities that, if converted into better results, would have given them more certainty over securing a top-four spot. With the situation now out of their full control, the coach emphasized that there is no hiding behind anything; the team must regroup and play to its maximum potential.
“We have got ourselves in this position, so we do rely on some other teams. We have not taken the opportunities in the last few weeks to get ourselves assured of a top-four spot, and now we are where we are and there is no hiding behind it. Yes, we could have played better, but now we need to regroup and ensure we are playing to our full potential next Saturday,” Hopes signed off.
