“Fourteen years of effort have finally turned into reality.” Macneil Hadley Noronha said those words to his coach, Irfan Sait, after Chennai Super Kings got in touch. The Karnataka all-rounder, who had been waiting through years of grind to earn his break, struggled to steady himself once he learned he would be joining CSK for the rest of IPL 2026. Sait described it as the most intense emotional moment he has seen since he began working with the player.
CSK moved quickly to secure Noronha after earlier developments left them short-handed. The five-time IPL champions named him as an injury replacement for Ramakrishna Ghosh earlier this week, with the switch later confirmed through an official IPL release. In the statement, it was noted that CSK had brought in a replacement for Ghosh, who injured his right foot during the match against Mumbai Indians on May 3. Ghosh was ruled out for the remainder of the season, and Noronha was set to join the squad for INR 30 lakh as cover for the injured player.
The call arrived at Noronha’s home around 4 PM, with the CSK team informing him that he would need to report the next day. Sait said Noronha immediately phoned him, and what followed left a lasting impression. “For the first time since I started coaching him, I saw him this emotional. This is years of hard work coming true,” Sait said. He added that Noronha had drawn interest from multiple franchises for trials, including Kolkata Knight Riders, Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals and CSK, before eventually getting the opportunity with Chennai. Sait also credited Shreyas Gopal for helping Noronha develop and prepare for the moment. “I am really happy for this kid. He has struggled and worked extremely hard for this day,” he added.
Sait sees Noronha’s value as more than just a replacement role. He believes the player’s defining strength is the balance he brings—both in how he handles his game and how he shapes his approach. “He is a god-gifted cricketer with a good temperament. I would say he is an all-format player,” Sait remarked. According to him, Noronha has consistently played with positivity as a batter, and his style is marked by calmness rather than showy aggression. “The beauty about him is that he doesn’t even look aggressive. He has got his own style of batting—so relaxed and so calm—but he hits the ball a long, long way. When he strikes the ball, he makes it look so effortless,” Sait said.
Noronha’s CSK breakthrough comes after a domestic season that put his name firmly in the spotlight. The 24-year-old finished top of the run charts in the CK Nayudu Trophy, scoring 1,037 runs across eight matches. His performances also earned him the BCCI Naman Award. He then carried that momentum into the Maharaja Trophy, where he played a key part in Mangaluru Dragons’ title-winning run in 2025. Noronha contributed 253 runs at a strike rate of 148.82, while also taking 10 wickets—an all-round output that underlined his impact in different phases of the game.
Those displays opened further doors, leading to opportunities with Karnataka’s squad for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and also the Rest of India Under-23 team. It was a path that culminated in a call-up to the IPL, a moment that Sait said had been built steadily over time.
Behind the cricket story is an upbringing shaped by distance. Noronha spent much of his childhood in Dubai due to his father’s business commitments. He began training under Sait at the age of 11, often flying to Bengaluru for short training stints with the Karnataka Institute of Cricket (KIOC). Eventually, Sait advised the family to shift permanently to India so Noronha could grow his cricket development in a more structured environment. “At some point, since he has roots in Mangalore, I suggested that he should consider shifting because UAE cricket only goes up to the Under-19 level and beyond that there isn’t much structure,” Sait said. He explained that while his father continued work in Dubai, Noronha’s mother and sister moved to Bengaluru to support his education and cricket.
That decision also meant splitting the family across two countries for years. Sait spoke about the sacrifices involved, recalling how the separation affected everyone around Noronha. “His parents have sacrificed a lot for the boy. Can you imagine? His father is in Dubai while the mother stayed here taking care of him. His sister is married now, but both brother and sister were here with the mother while she lived away from her husband in Dubai. It was a huge sacrifice,” Sait said. He added that the day-to-day support mattered just as much as the long-term planning. “Taking him to the stadium and bringing him back—she did everything. That lady has done everything to ensure he was well taken care of and protected.” In Sait’s view, the CSK call-up should be a direct tribute to those efforts. “His CSK call-up should be dedicated to his parents. He has made them proud,” he added.
Noronha’s cricket inspirations have also shaped his mindset. Although he is a right-handed batter and an off-spinner, he has long admired Yuvraj Singh. Sait recalled an incident from 2019, the day Yuvraj announced his retirement from international cricket. In a private tournament semifinal, Noronha approached his coach with a bold plan. Sait said Noronha told him he wanted to pay tribute to his hero. When asked how, Noronha replied that he would do it by hitting six sixes in an over. Sait warned him against risking the team’s chances in a semifinal, cautioning that failure could cost the match. Still, Noronha went ahead with the plan.
Sait said Noronha smashed six sixes in an over, helped win the semifinal and carried the team into the final. The team went on to win the final as well, turning a tribute idea into a match-winning moment. “He smashed six sixes in an over, won the match for the team and took them to the final. We also went on to win the final,” Sait said.
For CSK, Noronha’s arrival comes amid a season that has been repeatedly disrupted by injuries. Ramakrishna Ghosh was ruled out after a foot fracture, following their game against Mumbai Indians on May 2. The side has also had to manage setbacks involving Nathan Ellis, Dewald Brevis, Khaleel Ahmed, Ayush Mhatre and Jamie Overton. Meanwhile, MS Dhoni has not featured yet in the season as he continues recovering from a calf issue.
With Ghosh unavailable and CSK’s squad under pressure, Noronha’s inclusion is set to provide another option for the franchise as the tournament continues.
