The Indian Premier League 2026 has kept its usual air of uncertainty and controversy alive as the race for the final two playoff places tightens, with six franchises still in contention. The latest talking point arrived on Saturday at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, where the Rajasthan Royals suffered a defeat at the hands of the home side, Delhi Capitals. The pressure around Rajasthan’s choices only intensified because Punjab Kings had dropped points earlier in the day against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, meaning the Royals missed a rare opportunity to seize ground in the standings. Much of the heat has since been directed at skipper Riyan Parag and the team’s management, particularly for the call to leave Ravindra Jadeja out of such a crucial encounter.
Jadeja’s absence has become the defining debate. The all-rounder has enjoyed a standout season for Rajasthan since joining them in a headline trade worth INR 14 crore before the start of the campaign, ending his long 12-year association with Chennai Super Kings. The switch has looked seamless so far, with Jadeja operating as a stabiliser in the middle order while also bringing the kind of bowling control and experience that can change the tempo of a match. Even his fielding—long recognised as among the best in the sport—appeared clearly missed during Rajasthan’s loss.
While there were reports that Jadeja was rested under workload management, the timing of the decision has been widely questioned given what was at stake. With the result, Rajasthan failed to leapfrog Punjab, who remain fourth even after suffering six consecutive defeats. For many, the Royals’ situation demanded their most reliable options, and the debate intensified after Rajasthan could not defend 193 against Delhi Capitals. Parag’s top-order fireworks, including a fast 51 that contained five sixes, showed the batting had enough impetus, but the middle overs and the finishing phase did not convert the platform into the total Rajasthan needed.
Former India captain Kris Srikkanth was among the loudest critics of Jadeja’s omission, describing it in stark terms. He argued that a win would have put Rajasthan in a commanding position in the qualification race, especially with a match still in hand. Srikkanth also pointed to what he saw as signs of internal discomfort, noting that Parag did not even collect his post-match award after hitting the most sixes.
“With qualification at stake, you make such a move. This match was the easiest chance for them against DC. Jadeja was a compulsory must for this match. How can you not play him in the XI? It was an absurd move. I am convinced there is something wrong in the team. Parag didn’t even come to receive his trophy for the maximum sixes. So, there is something internally wrong within the team,” Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel.
Srikkanth’s criticism gained extra weight because Rajasthan’s defeat also highlighted how strongly Jadeja’s all-round skill set was needed on the day. The Royals did not push toward a bigger score despite an encouraging start from the top, and Parag’s choice to hand Donovan Ferreira the 18th over further underlined the concern that Rajasthan lacked a dependable bowling option at the decisive stage. Jadeja, meanwhile, has already amassed 190 runs at an average close to 48 this season and has taken eight wickets—numbers that reflect both impact with the bat and value with the ball.
In Jadeja’s place, Rajasthan turned to 24-year-old Ravi Singh, who was making his IPL debut. However, the debutant could not deliver when the margin was thin, managing only four runs before falling to Mitchell Starc. That substitution, particularly the decision to go with a younger batter in a match of such importance, only added to the scrutiny surrounding the Royals’ XI and their planning under pressure.
Srikkanth also questioned why an experienced spinner like Ravi Bishnoi was left unused. “It was stupidity not playing one of Jadeja or Bishnoi. Is Ravi Singh a replacement for Jadeja? Jadeja is a gun all-rounder and you replace him with a young batter like Ravi Singh in a crucial match. It felt like RR didn’t want to win this match. It looked like they played to lose. Parag batted brilliantly but the will to win seems to be missing within the team. They have lost their mind not playing Jadeja,” he added.
