Pant stripped of Test vice-captaincy as Rahul leads; India ODI squad named

MUMBAI: Out of form wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has been removed from the role of Test vice-captain for India’s one-off match against Afghanistan, with opening batter KL Rahul taking over the responsibility. Pant has also been left out of India’s ODI squad for the three-match series versus Afghanistan scheduled for June.

Bumrah and Jadeja rested as workload management guides selection

As anticipated, India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has been kept out of both the Test and ODI squads as part of workload management. The decision was taken by the selection panel led by Ajit Agarkar, with the squads announced in Guwahati on Tuesday.

Ravindra Jadeja has also been rested from both formats following a knee niggle picked up late in IPL-2026. Jadeja had missed Rajasthan Royals’ defeat to Delhi Capitals on Sunday night, but Ajit Agarkar clarified that the veteran was “rested” rather than omitted from consideration. “I think Jadeja has just been rested for this Test. He remains a very integral part of the Test team,” Agarkar said.

Agarkar further indicated that Bumrah’s bowling workload is being monitored closely ahead of India’s forthcoming tour of England later this year. “Bumrah is obviously getting his workload up. Hopefully, he’ll be back when we tour England,” he added.

ODI squad includes Rohit and Hardik, pending fitness

Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya have been named in the ODI squad, subject to fitness clearance. Rohit has been managing a hamstring problem throughout IPL-2026, while Pandya missed Mumbai Indians’ most recent three matches because of back spasms.

New faces get opportunities

Gurnoor Brar, a Punjab pacer, and Rajasthan left-arm spinner Manav Suthar have earned their first Test call-ups. Vidarbha spinner Harsh Dubey has been picked in both the Test and ODI squads after a standout domestic season.

Lucknow Super Giants fast bowler Prince Yadav has also received his maiden India call-up in the ODI squad, following a breakthrough IPL campaign. Notably, Brar and Suthar are teammates of captain Shubman Gill at Gujarat Titans. Despite this, the selectors overlooked Jammu & Kashmir seamer Auqib Nabi, even after a sensational Ranji Trophy run where he finished as the leading wicket-taker with 60 scalps in 10 matches.
