Off-spinner Aimee Maguire has earned a spot in Ireland’s 15-player squad for the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in England. Aimee has been deemed fit after recovering from an injury, but her sister, medium-pace bowler Jane Maguire, will miss the tournament after suffering a knee problem during the ongoing Cricket Ireland Women’s Super T20 Series.
Gaby Lewis will captain Ireland for the competition, which will be her team’s fifth appearance at the Women’s T20 World Cup. It will also be her maiden leadership assignment in a major global event, having taken over the role from Laura Delany in 2024. Despite the appointment, Lewis is set to skip the tri-series featuring West Indies and Pakistan as she continues her recovery from an injury picked up during her time with Lancashire in the ECB Women’s One-Day Cup.
With Lewis unavailable, vice-captain Orla Prendergast will lead Ireland in the tri-series. The hosts’ first fixture is scheduled to begin on May 28 at Clontarf. Speaking at the squad announcement press conference, Lewis confirmed that she expects to be available for selection by the time the World Cup gets underway.
Ireland have been drawn into Group 2 alongside hosts England, reigning champions New Zealand, plus Scotland, Sri Lanka and West Indies. Their tournament begins against Scotland in Manchester on June 13.
