The IPL 2026 clash between Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians at Eden Gardens was interrupted by rain on Wednesday, with play called off after the downpour started. The fixture carried added weight for KKR’s postseason hopes, with the franchise needing to keep pace in the race for playoff qualification. Heading into the match, KKR were placed eighth in the standings, having collected 11 points from 12 games.
With the points table already shaping up, three teams had secured their berths in the playoffs: Royal Challengers Bengaluru, who sit on 18 points from 13 matches, as well as Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers Hyderabad, both on 16 points from 13 outings. That leaves the remaining playoff picture tightly contested, with only Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants currently out of contention.
In effect, five teams are still in the hunt for a spot in the top four, and KKR’s path is clear but demanding. To put themselves in a strong position, they must win each of their final two matches. If those wins come through, KKR would finish on 15 points, and under certain combinations of other results, that total could be enough to see them through even without needing further help.
However, the scenario changes dramatically if the KKR vs MI game ends up being washed out. In that case, both sides would be awarded one point apiece. Even then, KKR could still reach the playoffs, but only to a maximum of 14 points—assuming they win their last match. The challenge would be steep because qualification would depend on a narrow set of outcomes, including Rajasthan Royals finishing at 14 points from 13 matches, Punjab Kings at 13 points from 13 matches, and both Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals ending on 12 points from 13 matches.
Beyond those results, KKR would also have to rely on a strong net run-rate and would need to deliver an emphatic win in their final game to swing the tie-break equations in their favour. That combination of match results and margins would make their road to the playoffs far more complicated than a straightforward points push.
