Hardik Pandya’s Captaincy Return Helps MI Endures Eden Gardens Stint

Kolkata Knight Riders kept their discipline with the ball to rein in Mumbai Indians, limiting the visitors to 147/8 in their IPL 2026 meeting at Eden Gardens on Wednesday. Hardik Pandya also marked a return to the captain’s role for MI, in a season that has already seen several leadership changes within short windows.

Captaincy carousel and early context

The match was notable for MI’s rotating leadership. With Hardik taking charge, Mumbai became the second franchise in IPL history to use three different captains across three successive games, with the previous two being Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah. Earlier, Pune Warriors India had also experienced a similar run of different skippers in three straight matches, led by Ross Taylor, Angelo Mathews and Aaron Finch.

There was also a background story to Hardik’s return: he had missed the earlier fixtures due to injury, and this game brought him back into the XI and back into the captaincy fold.

MI’s innings: cautious start, then a collapse

After being asked to bat first, Mumbai Indians started with restraint, going to 10/0 within the first two overs. But the third over swung the momentum hard in KKR’s favour.

  • On the third delivery of the 3rd over, Cameron Green struck twice in quick succession—first sending Ryan Rickelton back for 6, then removing Naman Dhir for a three-ball duck on the final ball of the same over.
  • The next over brought further damage: Saurabh Dubey dismissed Rohit Sharma for 15, leaving MI at 24/3 after four overs.
  • Dubey struck again in the sixth over, removing Suryakumar Yadav for 15, and MI ended the powerplay at 46/4.

After the eighth over, Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya steadied the innings, moving MI to 57/4. However, rain interrupted the action, forcing a temporary pause.

When play restarted, both batters continued cautiously and MI reached 64/4 at the halfway mark, still rebuilding after the early dismissals.

  • In the fourth ball of the 14th over, Kartik Tyagi made the breakthrough by dismissing Tilak Varma for 20, and Mumbai slipped to 88/5.
  • Hardik Pandya then fell for 26 in the 16th over, with Sunil Narine clean-bowling him on the second ball of the over.
  • On the fourth ball of the 17th over, Will Jacks was run out for 14 after a serious mix-up with Corbin Bosch.

By the end of the 18th over, MI were reeling at 115/7, and wickets kept falling in the late overs. Still, Corbin Bosch provided resistance at the death, finishing unbeaten on 32 off 18 balls to ensure Mumbai posted a competitive 147/8 in their 20 overs.

KKR bowling impact

KKR shared the wickets effectively, with the key contributions coming from different bowlers. Saurabh Dubey led the way with 2/34, while Cameron Green struck for 2/23. Kartik Tyagi also finished with 2/37, and Sunil Narine chipped in with 1/13 as the hosts maintained pressure throughout to restrict MI to their final total.
