Hardik Pandya returned to the Mumbai Indians captaincy on Wednesday against Kolkata Knight Riders after missing a handful of matches because of injury. Mumbai’s campaign has been defined by inconsistency, and with their season effectively slipping away, they were already outside the playoff picture before this fixture. That situation did not change in the clash at hand, where the MI batters managed only 147 for 8 in their 20 overs and were left with a difficult task even before the chase began.
To defend a total that low, Mumbai needed early wickets and regular breakthroughs. Corbin Bosch provided some early damage, but the game quickly showed that MI’s control with the ball and in the field was not sharp enough to keep KKR under pressure, especially during key moments.
One incident in the 10th over summed up MI’s day in the field. While Hardik Pandya was bowling, Rovman Powell struck a shot that went high into the air. Two Mumbai players—Robin Minz and Deepak Chahar—both watched the ball come down between them. Neither called for it, and when the catch went begging, the pair exchanged looks and gestures as if trying to sort out who should have taken responsibility. Chahar was positioned closer to the ball, and Pandya’s response was a visible, slow clap—an indication of frustration at the missed chance.
Ultimately, Kolkata Knight Riders got the better of Mumbai Indians by four wickets in a rain-affected IPL match, keeping their own playoff hopes alive in the process. Mumbai, sent in to bat, struggled to build any real momentum and finished on 147/8, with the target made even more challenging to defend due to the conditions.
MI had a shaky start as they slid to 41/4 during the sixth over. Hardik Pandya made 26 and Tilak Varma scored 20, and the duo tried to stabilize the innings with a 43-run partnership off 49 balls. Still, it was Corbin Bosch who provided the late boost, remaining unbeaten on 32 from 18 deliveries and helping Mumbai get close to the 150 mark.
For KKR, the wicket-taking responsibilities were shared across the bowling group. Saurabh Dubey returned figures of 2/34, Cameron Green took 2/23, Kartik Tyagi finished with 2/37, and Sunil Narine picked up 1/13.
In response, Manish Pandey (45) and Rovman Powell (40) combined to put KKR back in control during the chase, adding 64 runs together. Rinku Singh then played the key role at the end by scoring the winning runs and steering Kolkata home despite the interruptions.
With the ball, Corbin Bosch led the way for Mumbai again, taking three wickets for 30 runs. Deepak Chahar, Jasprit Bumrah and AM Ghazanfar also chipped in with one wicket each, but it was not enough to stop KKR from reaching the target.
