Hardik Pandya Hit With Code of Conduct Fine After MI’s Loss to KKR

NEW DELHI: Mumbai Indians have had yet another difficult moment in IPL 2026, with captain Hardik Pandya receiving an additional setback on Thursday after being fined for a breach of the tournament’s Code of Conduct. The incident came in the wake of MI’s defeat by Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens, a loss that only deepened the misery of a campaign that has already gone off the rails for the five-time champions.

Pandya was penalised after he was seen expressing clear frustration during the match, and the timing of the offence underlined the intensity of the moment. As per an official IPL communication, he was found to have breached Level 1 of the Code of Conduct, which covers conduct related to abusing cricket equipment and ground fixtures.

The statement detailed that Pandya was in breach of Article 2.2, a clause that deals with “abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during a Match.” The key episode took place on the fourth ball of the 10th over of KKR’s chase. While walking back to his run-up, the MI skipper forcefully knocked the bails off the stumps, a visible act that drew the match officials’ attention.

Pandya accepted the charge and the sanction, with match referee Rajiv Seth administering the penalty. Along with the fine, he was handed one demerit point. Under IPL rules, collecting between four and seven demerit points can result in a one-match suspension, keeping the captain’s immediate availability under watch in the final stages of the league.

This disciplinary blow landed on top of another frustrating night for Mumbai Indians, who are already out of the playoff race. MI set a modest target of 147/8 on a surface that offered challenges, but they were unable to manage the pressure when it mattered. KKR chased down the total with seven balls to spare, keeping their own playoff hopes alive in the process.

After the match, Pandya acknowledged that the team’s batting and fielding shortcomings continued to haunt them throughout the season. He pointed out that MI have often been short by small margins in their batting performances and have also struggled to convert chances in the field. “Definitely as a batting group, we were 20 runs short,” Pandya said. “I think throughout the season, we’ve been quite poor in fielding. We have dropped a lot of catches. If you want to win games, you need to grab all the chances, even half chances as well.”

With the latest result, Mumbai’s overall record in IPL 2026 stands at just four wins, and they still have one league match remaining. That final outing is against Rajasthan Royals on Sunday, but the season’s narrative has already been defined by missed opportunities, inconsistency, and moments like Thursday’s on-field incident that add further strain to an already tough campaign.
