KKR vs MI: Eden Gardens roars as Rahane’s side secures crucial sixth win

On May 20, the storied Eden Gardens crowd watched Kolkata Knight Riders dominate Mumbai Indians in a high-pressure IPL moment, with the Ajinkya Rahane-led unit banking their sixth win of the campaign. That result kept KKR firmly in the fight for qualification, while also adding another chapter to the franchise’s growing “comeback” narrative after a miserable start in which they managed no victories from their opening six matches. Alongside the team’s resurgence, veteran batter Manish Pandey returned to the equation at exactly the right time, having been on the sidelines before rejoining the playing XI against Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 3. His return has provided extra experience and batting depth to a KKR middle order that has struggled to find consistency.

Pandey, a well-known figure for his big-match impact, has previously produced memorable performances in high-stakes IPL fixtures, including the 94 he played in KKR’s title-winning final against Punjab Kings in 2014. Yet despite his reputation, his first four appearances of this season did not translate into many batting opportunities, as the bulk of the scoring responsibilities were handled by the top order. Still, his usefulness to the side has never been limited to runs. Throughout his career, Pandey’s fielding has stood out, and he once again reminded everyone of his class by taking what many viewed as one of the standout catches of IPL 2026 during a recent contest against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

When the batting opportunity finally arrived, Pandey made certain it mattered. He stepped in and helped KKR complete a successful chase of 148 runs against Mumbai Indians, delivering a calm, measured knock of 45 off 33 balls. The innings, played in what proved to be a surprisingly demanding batting surface, earned him the Player of the Match award—an acknowledgment of both his shot selection and his ability to manage the innings when conditions were not particularly friendly.

Supporters and cricket observers quickly took note of the knock and what it represented for KKR at this stage of the season. Former India cricketer and commentator Deep Dasgupta praised Pandey’s composure and tactical awareness against MI, pointing out that his all-round contributions—batting in different roles and making his presence felt in the field—are part of what has kept him relevant in T20 cricket even as he approaches the later stages of his career. “Manish Pandey has always had a special ability to contribute with both bat and on the field. He has batted in multiple positions, and at this stage of his career, he knows how to use his experience effectively. That is exactly what he did against Mumbai. Low-scoring games are always tense,” Dasgupta said on Star Sports’ ‘Amul Cricket Live’.

Dasgupta also detailed how Pandey’s long IPL journey—spanning 19 years, with participation in every season since the league began in 2008—came to the forefront when KKR needed stability at a key juncture. He arrived after an early blow, following the dismissal of impact player and opener Finn Allen, and then adapted quickly to the match conditions. The former India player highlighted that Pandey anchored the innings intelligently and kept the chase moving by taking calculated risks, rather than resorting to reckless slogging that can derail a chase on a tough wicket. “After losing early wickets in the Powerplay, he could have gone into a shell. But he didn’t. He played with positive intent, took calculated risks, hit over the infield, and was brave enough to go aerial when needed. He also played the ball late when the situation demanded. All that time spent in the nets and his overall batsmanship paid off for KKR,” Dasgupta analysed.

With KKR still aiming for a top-four finish, Dasgupta was equally impressed by the way Pandey repaid the faith shown in him by the franchise’s management. Pandey’s return came at a crucial stage of the season, and he delivered an immediate impact rather than taking time to settle. “It is good to see Manish get a game and play an impactful innings. Once you have been part of the IPL for such a long period of time and teams show faith in you, you must repay that faith. Manish did that brilliantly against Mumbai,” Dasgupta added.
