Former England captain Michael Vaughan has voiced concern over the escalating public scrutiny surrounding Lucknow Super Giants owner Sanjiv Goenka after a tense on-field exchange with captain Rishabh Pant in IPL 2026. Vaughan believes repeated confrontations in view of fans could undermine team stability, warning that LSG may start to lose control of the internal culture if such moments keep playing out during the season.
The controversy reignited in the aftermath of Lucknow’s home defeat to Delhi Capitals. Goenka was spotted holding an animated conversation with Pant during/after the contest, immediately reviving fresh memories of the fallout involving KL Rahul during the 2024 campaign. The incident rapidly spread online, triggering heavy debate and backlash, and LSG later attempted to curb the narrative by releasing an “unfiltered” clip of the exchange.
That intervention, however, did not fully settle the matter. New claims soon surfaced suggesting the footage might have been re-created rather than representing the original viral recording, keeping the dispute in the public eye.
Vaughan questions owners’ presence in team business
Speaking about the growing controversy, Vaughan said he strongly dislikes the sight of owners getting visibly involved in team affairs right after matches—particularly when it happens on the pitch. In his view, such scenes naturally invite speculation and attract attention that can quickly turn negative.
Vaughan added that if these types of incidents continue, they could trigger a wider breakdown inside the franchise. He pointed out the sequence of what fans are seeing on social media: the owner on the field with the captain and senior cricket figures, which he believes can fuel assumptions and rumours even if nothing serious is intended.
“I’m intrigued by this franchise, I must admit. I look from quite far away, and I keep seeing things on social media, and I see the owner on the pitch with Rishabh, with Tom Moody, Justin Langer. I hate seeing that. I just hate seeing it after one game on the pitch. You can have those conversations in private. And even if they’re nice conversations, I just don’t understand them because what you’re doing is leading people to suggest that other things are said in that group that maybe aren’t. It might have just been a fun conversation, who knows? But yeah, they’re an interesting franchise. But I think the Lucknow wheels could get quite loose quite quickly,” Vaughan said.
He also urged that Pant should be allowed to continue in his current role for at least a few games, emphasising that consistency is crucial when decisions are being questioned publicly.
Vaughan said, “Often quotes are taken out of context, but if there is even a hint of confusion in the group, then clarity is key. If the decision is for Rishabh to take on that role alongside Mitch, it should be backed for five or six games.”
Delhi match: Pant’s opening gamble and the role question
- Pant was moved to open against Delhi in a surprise tactical call.
- The plan did not deliver the intended impact, with the captain finishing on seven runs in Lucknow’s defeat.
- While it remains unclear whether Lucknow will stick with the approach, Pant suggested after the game that his role is not yet fully settled.
Lucknow are set to take on Sunrisers Hyderabad in their next outing—scheduled as their second match of IPL 2026—on Sunday.
