Rajasthan Royals coach explains Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s Impact Player role

Mumbai: Rajasthan Royals’ latest IPL talking point is Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, whose explosive batting has turned him into an instant crowd favourite. The left-handed opener has been clearing the ropes regularly, but there has also been debate about his role as an “Impact Player,” where he only bats and does not take the field in those matches.

Sooryavanshi’s numbers spark praise and debate

At just 15 years old, Sooryavanshi has piled up 579 runs across 13 games in IPL-2026. His average stands at 44.53, while his strike rate is an eye-catching 236.32, with three half-centuries and one hundred already in the tournament.

Yet the same decision that keeps him fresh with the bat has drawn criticism. Former India batters Sanjay Manjrekar and Mohammed Kaif questioned RR’s choice to use the youngster as an Impact Sub, arguing that a lack of field time could slow his overall development as a complete cricketer.

Critics raise fielding concerns

  • Sooryavanshi has scored 579 runs in 13 IPL-2026 matches at a 44.53 average.
  • His strike rate in the tournament is 236.32, with three fifties and one hundred.
  • Manjrekar said not fielding can hamper a player’s growth, since fielding is a specialist skill.
  • Kaif noted Sooryavanshi “hasn’t taken a catch” this IPL season.
  • Trevor Penny said Sooryavanshi is a “very good fielder” and that it’s about match-up and keeping him fresh.

When asked why RR were using Sooryavanshi only as an Impact Player ahead of a crucial clash against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday afternoon, assistant coach Trevor Penny pushed back on the criticism. Penny insisted the teenager is capable in the field and that the selection approach is more about planning than any doubt over his ability.

Penny said Sooryavanshi’s fielding traits are strong, describing him as a player with “great hands,” good movement, and the ability to dive and anticipate. He added that there was never a message that the youngster should be kept out of the field because he cannot perform there.

Instead, Penny pointed to the way RR structure their batting phases. With Sooryavanshi opening the innings and then potentially coming back in a second innings scenario, the coaching staff believes the arrangement works to his advantage. Penny also suggested that at times a slightly more experienced option may have been available, but the core idea remains keeping him fresh for batting.

Penny also addressed running between the wickets, calling it “very good.” He noted that Sooryavanshi doesn’t need to be relied upon for heavy running all the time, but can do it when required—citing a recent example where the youngster faced 10 balls out of 11 and stayed intent on finishing the contest rather than trying to hit from the first delivery.

“In his bubble” — Penny on the youngster’s mindset

After showering praise on Sooryavanshi’s form, Penny described his temperament as refreshing. He said the youngster “lives in his own bubble,” is a pleasant presence around the group, and carries confidence without getting consumed by the noise surrounding him.

Penny also revealed that RR rarely need to manage him with constant conversations. In his view, Sooryavanshi works hard in practice, then goes out to play with enjoyment, and that kind of focus is uncommon even after four decades in cricket.

With Sooryavanshi set to play at the Wankhede Stadium for the first time, Penny said the teenager is clearly excited. He added that the staff hopes the same calm mindset continues into the match, implying that the bubble approach has been helping his performances.

How RR manage the hype

Penny then expanded on the environment around the youngster, crediting the wider team, management and support staff. He said the coaching setup looks after the small details that matter for a young player, especially with long nights and the routine demands of the competition.

He also referenced the learning curve Sooryavanshi has gone through, adding a comparison to another period in which the youngster faced some struggles before bouncing back strongly. Penny framed it as a sign that Sooryavanshi is handling pressure better as the season has progressed.

Jofra Archer and the England Test debate

Separate from Sooryavanshi’s spotlight, RR’s England quick Jofra Archer has become part of another conversation. Archer is set to miss the first Test against New Zealand, beginning June 4, because of IPL commitments, and that decision has triggered criticism back in England.

Former England captain Michael Atheron questioned the arrangement in his column in “The Times,” asking whether the “central contract” had value if Archer was going to sit out the opening Test of the summer. Another ex-captain, Michael Vaughan, also criticised the ECB-BCCI arrangement, challenging the fast bowler’s level of IPL involvement.

Penny’s response to the backlash

Asked whether Archer is affected by the criticism, Penny gave a practical answer. He said the tournament is huge and widely understood as the next major priority for players, adding that if Archer misses one England match, that is part of the choice he is making.

Penny suggested Archer may be slightly annoyed but does not believe the debate is a major factor. He added that people will always react—either after a player chooses IPL and annoys others in the international setup, or after a player leaves early and faces consequences for not being fully available.

Penny also noted that Archer has not even been talked about much in the dressing room in relation to the controversy, concluding that the situation is simply what it is.

Injury updates for RR before the MI clash

Penny also provided an update on RR’s fitness situation. He said senior all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja is dealing with an elbow issue, while skipper Riyan Parag has hamstring and shoulder problems, and both missed the last match due to injuries.

Regarding their availability for the crucial final league game against Mumbai Indians on Sunday, Penny said the duo are “looking good,” but acknowledged they still have niggles. He explained that they will be tested during practice on the day to determine whether they can be picked for the match.

Penny stressed he could not go into further detail about selection, but reiterated that both players appear in good shape heading into the decision point. He finished by underlining that the concerns remain minor, though they are still worth monitoring closely.
