As IPL 2026 got underway, former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin had already delivered a blunt reality check to Arjun Tendulkar—suggesting that, with the strength of Lucknow Super Giants’ pace attack, Arjun might struggle to get a game at all. When the moment finally arrived on Saturday at the Ekana Cricket Stadium, Ashwin said it neatly mirrored how LSG’s campaign had gone. Still, what caught the veteran bowler’s attention most was not the backdrop of the debut, but the way Arjun absorbed the pressure after spending nearly two months on the sidelines, while also showing sharp cricketing awareness.
Ashwin’s pre-season warning and what the debut revealed
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin revisited the challenges Arjun has faced—especially the constant comparisons with his father, Sachin Tendulkar. In Ashwin’s view, that kind of backdrop does not make a young player’s journey simple. However, he also pointed to what Arjun showed in the match against Punjab Kings as evidence of both his work in training and his mental resilience.
- Ashwin noted that Arjun’s path has been made harder by the inevitability of being compared to Sachin Tendulkar.
- He said the outing versus Punjab Kings reflected the effort Arjun puts in during net sessions and the toughness he brings when the pressure rises.
LSG debut: Ashwin highlights Arjun’s temperament and learning
Arjun, who made his LSG debut as a left-arm pacer, finished with bowling figures of 1 for 36 in his four overs. Ashwin deliberately chose to focus less on raw “skill talk” and more on the qualities he believes Arjun displayed under match conditions.
“I won’t talk about his skill. But his journey is not easy because he will always be compared to his father. However, I will say two things about him—he is extremely hard-working and does not back down from a contest. After bowling, he gives you a stare. Even if you hit him for a four or six, he comes back harder. Those are two qualities you have to give the kid credit for,” Ashwin said.
Key moments: bodyline bouncers, a missed chance, and a reversing yorker
For Ashwin, one over in particular summed up Arjun’s awareness—his ability to spot a batter’s weakness against bodyline-style bowling. In Arjun’s opening over, he tested Prabhsimran Singh with a sharp bouncer that produced a top edge. The chance went to wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant, who failed to hold on.
In the following over, Prabhsimran and Shreyas Iyer launched a counterattack, smashing him for two boundaries and a six. Yet Ashwin said Arjun did not lose his rhythm or mindset. Even when Iyer struck back-to-back fours in Arjun’s third over, Arjun responded with a searing yorker that reversed sharply, trapping Prabhsimran plumb in front.
- Arjun’s first over included a bouncer that generated a top edge from Prabhsimran Singh, but wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant couldn’t complete the catch.
- Prabhsimran and Shreyas Iyer punished Arjun in the next over with two fours and a six.
- Arjun answered again after that, delivering a yorker that reversed and trapped Prabhsimran Singh plumb in front in his third over.
Describing what impressed him most, Ashwin added that the yorker’s movement was the standout—but he was equally struck by the earlier decision to use the bodyline bouncer. “That yorker actually reversed. I also saw videos on social media of him practising yorkers extensively. But the one thing that truly impressed me was the bodyline bouncer to Prabhsimran. That is never easy for a batter. There was a top edge and Pant could not hold on to the catch, but Arjun identified the weakness, executed the plan and then nailed the yorker as well. For someone playing his first game of the season, that was very impressive,” he said.
Debut timing, praise from others, and LSG’s season setback
Turning back to his comments from earlier in the tournament, Ashwin acknowledged that Arjun’s debut itself told a story about LSG’s disappointing run. Still, he urged viewers not to let the wider context overshadow the youngster’s performance.
“Look at the fast-bowling depth in the LSG squad, yet Arjun managed to get a debut game. That tells you the story of their season. Had things gone according to plan, he probably would not have played, and I said that at the start. But now that he has got his chance and proved himself, I hope he goes on to play more games,” Ashwin said.
Ashwin’s praise was not limited to his own commentary. Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh also lauded Arjun after Punjab Kings’ win, posting online: “Great to see #ArjunTendulkar get a game, strike a critical wicket and bowl really well!”
Meanwhile, Arjun’s sister Sara Tendulkar shared an emotional message praising his patience and his ability to handle the pressure that came with the spotlight. On Instagram, she wrote: “You deserve the world, my little brother. So, so, so proud of your hard work, your ability to handle pressure, and your patience through it all. Love you forever and always (and some more),”
Despite Arjun’s efforts, Lucknow Super Giants lost the match, marking their 10th defeat of the season and leaving them rooted to the bottom of the table.
