Rajasthan Royals have a direct route to keeping their IPL 2026 playoffs hopes alive when they face Mumbai Indians in their final league match on Sunday. A win would secure RR a top-four finish, lifting them to 16 points from 14 games. Punjab Kings sit on 15 points, while Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals can each finish with a maximum of 15 and 14 points respectively. With those permutations in place, results elsewhere mean Rajasthan only need to win to qualify. A loss, however, would knock them out of the equation and give Punjab Kings the upper hand. If KKR manage to win their game, the final decision could then hinge on Net Run Rate (NRR).
For both sides, the encounter is likely to be a test of stamina and sharpness in what promises to be a hot and humid afternoon. Mumbai will look to end their campaign on a positive note, aiming for a consolation victory, while Rajasthan will be fully aware that any slip could leave their qualification hopes out of their control.
Rajasthan enter the match after stumbling in more outings than they have managed to win over their last five games, but they will be encouraged by the nature of the venue, where the dimensions are on the smaller side. Those conditions could allow them to play with more freedom and intensity from the outset.
Although Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s early fireworks have been significant, the primary threat for Mumbai Indians is Yashasvi Jaiswal. The India opener, and a local talent as well, attacked Jasprit Bumrah and his teammates during the contest in Guwahati, smashing 77 off 32 balls and effectively putting the match beyond reach in the first half itself.
Jaiswal returns to the ground where he struck his maiden IPL century three years ago and, a year later against the same opponent, followed it up with his second hundred. The familiarity with the setting could provide him an added edge as Rajasthan chase the result they need.
Even with Jaiswal’s impact in mind, RR will still require steadier contributions from their captain Riyan Parag and Dhruv Jurel. Both bat in key positions, yet they have not always delivered the momentum during the crucial middle overs. At times, Jurel has lacked the necessary thrust, while Parag continues to look for a more consistent rhythm.
On current form, Rajasthan face a side that may carry plenty of confidence, with Mumbai having a stronger bench of players who are hitting their stride at exactly the right moment.
As a point of reassurance, Mumbai’s recent run is not dramatically different from Rajasthan’s, with both teams having recorded two wins and three defeats in their last five matches. Still, with pride and the desire to finish on a high, the hosts will be determined to make their final outing count.
