Kolkata Knight Riders have suffered yet another late setback in IPL 2026, with Matheesha Pathirana ruled out for the remainder of the tournament. Luvnith Sisodia, a wicketkeeper-batter from Karnataka, has been brought in to replace him. The change arrives just as KKR’s qualification hopes are hanging by a thin thread.
Quick facts
- Matheesha Pathirana has been ruled out of the rest of IPL 2026 for KKR.
- Luvnith Sisodia has been named as his replacement.
- Pathirana picked up a hamstring injury during KKR’s win over Gujarat Titans last weekend.
- He will miss KKR’s final league-stage game against Delhi Capitals.
- KKR are still in the playoff race but only via a narrow mathematical route.
Pathirana’s injury was reported as a hamstring problem picked up during KKR’s victory over the Gujarat Titans last weekend. With that issue now sidelining him, KKR will have to move forward without their specialist option as they gear up for a must-win encounter against the Delhi Capitals.
Qualification scenario turns even tighter
KKR’s absence of Pathirana lands at an awkward moment. The franchise remains technically alive in the race for the playoffs, but the path is extremely conditional. First, they require the Rajasthan Royals to lose to the Mumbai Indians.
Even if that happens, KKR’s job is still incomplete. They must then defeat Delhi Capitals by a large margin to overhaul Punjab Kings and keep their hopes alive to reach the Eliminator. With results elsewhere and a big swing in match margin both needed, every disruption inside the squad becomes magnified.
Pathirana’s exit also underlines how expensive the gamble was for KKR. The team invested ₹18 crore in the Sri Lankan pacer, banking on him to become a decisive force at the back end of innings. Instead, the plan never really had time to take shape.
There was already a delay before he even arrived fully with the KKR group. Earlier in the year, Pathirana sustained a left calf injury during Sri Lanka’s Super Eight run at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. He was only cleared to join the IPL phase in mid-April, by which point KKR’s campaign had moved into a more pressurised stage.
When he eventually earned a spot in the playing XI against the Gujarat Titans, it lasted barely a glimpse. His spell was cut short after just 1.2 overs as he walked off with visible discomfort in his left hamstring. That moment was meant to be his first proper chance of the season, but it became the start of the end—Pathirana will now not feature again in IPL 2026.
For KKR, the uncomfortable reality is the “what-if” factor. A ₹18 crore signing meant to deliver specialist value has finished the campaign without meaningful match involvement. The squad still has to fight for qualification, but the bowling depth they expected to rely on has been reduced at the most critical time.
Sisodia brought in, but not as a like-for-like swap
To keep the squad balanced for the remaining league fixture, KKR have turned to Luvnith Sisodia. The left-handed wicketkeeper-batter from Karnataka has played 13 T20 matches for his state side, yet he has not made his IPL debut so far.
This is not a direct replacement in terms of role. Pathirana was a fast bowler who was expected to operate in the death overs, while Sisodia’s value lies in wicketkeeping and batting depth. The move therefore addresses availability and coverage rather than tactical equivalence—especially after Angkrish Raghuvanshi was ruled out with a concussion and a finger fracture.
Sisodia is also not a foreign name inside the IPL ecosystem. He has previously been part of Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Kolkata Knight Riders. KKR had additionally signed him at the 2025 mega auction, which means the franchise already had familiarity with him within its broader planning.
For KKR, timing is the central concern. Their remaining route to the playoffs now depends on outcomes elsewhere and a dominant performance versus Delhi Capitals. They need runs, clarity on selection, and also a measure of help from the Mumbai Indians—while Pathirana’s injury removes another option from a group that has already dealt with interruptions during the season.
With Sisodia added, KKR can field a complete unit for their last league match, but the bigger storyline remains Pathirana’s lost tournament. The franchise paid premium money for a bowler expected to swing tight contests during the sharpest overs, only for injuries to restrict him to a fleeting appearance before the season moved beyond his reach.
