Rajat Patidar Says Phil Salt Fit, But RCB Yet to Finalise Playing XI for Qualifier 1

Royal Challengers Bengaluru have left the door open for Phil Salt’s participation in IPL 2026 Qualifier 1 against Gujarat Titans, with captain Rajat Patidar stating that the England opener is fit but still being monitored ahead of the high-stakes knockout at Dharamshala. Salt missed the closing stretch of the league phase after featuring in RCB’s opening six matches of the season, making his fitness status one of the key selection dilemmas for the franchise.

Patidar confirms Salt is fit, but RCB still weigh options

  1. RCB have not finalised their playing XI for Qualifier 1, with Patidar saying the final call will come after evaluating conditions.
  2. Patidar indicated that Salt is available in terms of fitness, but the management will continue to assess him before confirming the team.
  3. He framed the decision as a balance between the wicket and Salt’s readiness, rather than rushing to lock in a replacement based solely on availability.

In a press interaction ahead of Qualifier 1, Patidar said RCB are still working through the team combination. “Salt is fit, he is under observation. But we have not decided yet on our playing XI. We will look at the wicket and then we will decide,” he stated. With a knockout spot on the line, the captain’s message underlined a cautious approach—keeping Salt’s return possible while ensuring the side is set up correctly for the surface and match tempo in Dharamshala.

Why Salt’s return matters for the top order

Salt’s potential comeback is expected to influence RCB’s early batting structure, particularly in powerplay cricket. His aggressive approach had been central to RCB’s rhythm in the initial portion of the season, and the injury that ruled him out disrupted that flow. If he is cleared to play, RCB would regain a specialist overseas opener who can attack Gujarat’s new-ball bowlers from the first over. However, Patidar’s comments suggest the coaching group does not want to make a hasty call without fully reading both the pitch and Salt’s match readiness.

RCB and Titans finish level on points, separated by net run rate

Heading into Qualifier 1, RCB sit at the top of the points table with 18 points from 14 matches. Gujarat Titans also ended with 18 points, but Bengaluru progressed to the top spot due to a superior net run rate. That first- and second-place finish means both teams still have two opportunities to reach the final, yet Patidar stressed that RCB are not planning around any safety net.

RCB’s mindset: win and go straight to the final

Patidar said the dressing-room focus has stayed consistent since the start of the campaign. “Win and go to the final. That is chat we have had from day 1. Topping the table was something we manifested. We will get the rest, if we win this match,” he remarked. In that context, Salt’s status becomes a central part of RCB’s tactical planning—especially with the qualifier acting as the direct route to the championship match.

Patidar also avoided reducing the contest to a single-player storyline. While Salt’s presence would restore an attacking overseas option at the top, he suggested the outcome will depend on how both sides manage pressure during key phases of the game. “On the given day, the team which will perform better under the pressure, they will win. We just need to hold our nerves,” Patidar said.

Bowling response required after last league outing

RCB are also expected to bounce back with the ball after a tough outing against Sunrisers Hyderabad in their most recent league match. Patidar backed Bhuvneshwar Kumar and the rest of the bowling group to stick with the processes that have worked for them throughout the season. He pointed to powerplay bowling as a likely area of importance, emphasising the team’s ability to secure early breakthroughs.

“He is an experienced bowler. The last game had not gone the way we wanted but bowling is our strength, and the way we bowl in the powerplay, I think that will be very crucial. So we look for early wickets, and that is what we have done so far. That is what Bhuvi, Hazlewood and Rasik are doing. So we hope that we continue the same process,” Patidar added.

With Qualifier 1 approaching, the Salt decision remains the main unresolved thread in RCB’s build-up. Patidar confirmed that the opener is fit, yet not fully locked in—meaning the final XI could be shaped by both match conditions and Salt’s readiness. In a playoff where control in the opening overs can swing momentum quickly, that call may end up defining the first step of the night for Bengaluru.
