A heated argument over the merits of the Indian Premier League compared with county cricket has flared into a public spat, with former Australia fast bowler Jason Gillespie taking a sharp swipe at ex-England batter Kevin Pietersen. The row centres on remarks involving young England batter Jacob Bethell, whose situation has become a flashpoint in the wider debate about how best to develop emerging players. The discussion gathered pace after Alastair Cook advised Bethell to weigh up an early departure from the IPL in favour of returning to county cricket for more consistent match time.
IPL vs county cricket debate intensifies
The controversy began when former England captain Alastair Cook suggested that Bethell should consider leaving the IPL ahead of schedule and return to the county circuit to secure regular opportunities. Bethell is currently attached to Royal Challengers Bengaluru for IPL 2026, but he has spent a large portion of the campaign sitting out games. Despite that, he continues to be widely viewed as one of England’s most promising batting talents.
Cook, while acknowledging that the IPL can provide learning benefits through exposure to high-level cricket, argued that actual on-field practice matters more for a young player’s growth. He specifically questioned Bethell’s role, saying the batter was not being used in a way that would help his development at this stage of the season.
“Bethell shouldn’t really be it because he’s not opening. He’s sitting at the IPL not doing anything. Ideally, he could come back and open for Warwickshire to help England,” Cook said on the Stick to Cricket podcast.
Pietersen, however, rejected the idea outright and accused Cook of failing to understand what it is like to be part of an IPL squad environment. In a direct response, Pietersen said Cook lacked insight into the day-to-day realities of living within an IPL setup, even if a player is not getting frequent match involvement.
“Alastair Cook has absolutely NO IDEA what it’s like to be in the IPL,” Pietersen wrote on X. “Stay in India, Jacob. Even though you're not playing, you're learning and will be a way better player.”
Cook then reasserted his position, arguing that there comes a point where players must play matches rather than simply gaining exposure. He suggested that the IPL is an elite environment, but that game time remains the deciding factor for development.
“There’s got to be a stage where you have to play,” Cook said. “No one publicly is ever going to say the IPL’s not the place to be because everyone knows it lines everyone’s pockets.”
Gillespie unloads on Pietersen
Jason Gillespie has now thrown himself into the argument, backing Cook while also criticising Pietersen’s response. Speaking on The Fast Bowling Cartel podcast alongside fellow Australian greats Glenn McGrath and Damien Fleming, Gillespie mocked Pietersen’s dismissal of Cook and delivered a sarcastic attack on the former England batter’s reasoning.
“The nerve of Sir Alastair Cook to suggest something like that,” Gillespie said sarcastically. “KP has gone off the deep end and stated that Sir Alastair Cook’s opinion doesn’t matter because he’s never been to the IPL and would not know.”
Gillespie maintained that Cook’s underlying point was sensible, particularly given the fact that Bethell has not been receiving regular opportunities in matches. He suggested that Pietersen’s reaction was far too aggressive for an opinion that, in Gillespie’s view, was grounded in the need for consistent playing time.
“I think Sir Alastair Cook had a valid point, but the way KP absolutely hammered him for having an opinion — give me a spell, boys. Absolute nonsense,” Gillespie added.
From there, the former Australia quick escalated further, targeting Pietersen’s claims that he helped encourage players to prioritise franchise cricket. Gillespie used sharp sarcasm to dispute the idea that Pietersen’s influence was purely beneficial for players’ careers.
“He reckons he would have played 150 Tests or more. He’s the one who paved the way,” Gillespie said sarcastically. “Thank you, Kevin, for the stars above, the sun, the moon, the earth we walk on and the air we breathe. It was all about cash for you, Kev. Give me a break, you muppet.”
