GT’s Glenn Phillips Fires Back After Qualifier 1 Defeat, Shocks Media

Gujarat Titans batter Glenn Phillips addressed the media at a press conference on Tuesday following his side’s defeat in the Indian Premier League 2026 Qualifier 1. The appearance surprised some, with Phillips not featuring in the playing XI for the match, yet he still fielded questions in front of reporters as his team prepared to move on from the loss.

Phillips hits back at questions over GT’s mindset

  1. During the briefing, Phillips was asked whether seeing Royal Challengers Bengaluru post a huge 254 suggested Gujarat had effectively already conceded mentally.
  2. Phillips reacted sharply, describing the question as “silly” and “terrible,” insisting that professional cricketers do not go into matches intending to give up.
  3. He stressed that chasing a total like 250 requires everything to fall into place, and that despite Gujarat’s effort, the chase did not go according to plan.
  4. Gujarat Titans were eventually dismissed for 162, suffering a 92-run defeat in the qualifier.

Phillips also pointed to the impact of early setbacks. With Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan, and Jos Buttler—GT’s top-order trio—falling quickly, he admitted the mounting pressure of the required run-rate played a major role in the batting collapse.

“There’s a huge amount of scoreboard pressure when you’re trying to chase 250. And, you know, very few teams have done it,” Phillips said. “Obviously, Punjab Kings have managed to do it a couple of times, which has been phenomenal. And I think they’ve maybe made it seem easier than it is. I’ve yet to be part of a team that’s gotten anywhere near 250, so, you know, sometimes it just is what it is.”

Explaining why he was at the briefing

  1. A reporter then asked Phillips whether it felt unusual to speak to the media after not taking part in the match.
  2. Phillips responded that it was not strange at all, saying the squad operates as one unit and that everyone has an equal role to play around media responsibilities.
  3. He added that an outsider’s viewpoint—particularly for players who now have to compete in the Eliminator—can be useful, helping them settle their minds and prepare properly.
  4. Phillips concluded by encouraging the set of players on the field to focus on their next task, referencing Ashish Nehra’s “chill pill” message and urging them to be ready for the upcoming game.

With the qualifier loss confirmed and the next match on the horizon, Phillips’ comments underlined both the frustration of falling short in a steep chase and the importance of regrouping quickly for what comes next in the tournament.
