Former India captain Anil Kumble expects Sunrisers Hyderabad to enter the IPL 2026 Eliminator with a more balanced and deeper squad than Rajasthan Royals, arguing that Hyderabad boast a wider spread of genuine match-winners in both departments. The do-or-die encounter is set for the PCA New International Stadium, where the side that loses will be eliminated from the tournament.
Eliminator preview: Kumble’s key points
Speaking ahead of the high-pressure game, Kumble said Rajasthan’s blueprint appears to lean too heavily on a limited group of players, while SRH have multiple options who can swing momentum at crucial moments. He singled out Rajasthan’s dependence on Yashasvi Jaiswal, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Jofra Archer, contrasting it with SRH’s broader pool of performers.
“If you compare the two teams man for man, SRH have more match-winners. Rajasthan, on the other hand, relies heavily on a few individuals – Yashasvi Jaiswal, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, and Jofra Archer,” Kumble said.
Kumble also stressed how the Eliminator could ultimately tilt on whether those Rajasthan names deliver when the pressure rises. In his view, if that small set of batters and bowlers don’t produce, the Royals’ overall structure in both batting and bowling could look underpowered in a knockout setting.
“If those three don't fire, their batting and bowling both look thin. That could be the difference in a knockout game,” he added.
Why SRH’s earlier win over RR matters
The former India coach pointed to SRH’s league-stage victory over Rajasthan as one of the defining turning points of Hyderabad’s campaign. He highlighted the debut impact of young fast bowlers Praful Hinge and Sakib Hussain in that match, saying their immediate influence helped reshape SRH’s bowling attack from that point onward.
- Kumble identified the league encounter between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals as the game SRH would “remember dearly,” because it marked the IPL debuts of Praful Hinge and Sakib Hussain.
- He said that before that fixture, Hyderabad had a different combination, implying the team’s balance and options evolved after introducing the young pacers.
- Kumble credited Hinge and Hussain with dismantling Rajasthan’s top-order during the match, describing it as a clear shift toward a winning formula for SRH.
“Before that game, they had a different playing combination. After bringing in those young bowlers, they found a winning formula. Hinge and Hussain tore through RR’s top order in that game,” Kumble said.
Possible XI call: Hinge in place of Harshal Patel
Looking ahead to the Eliminator, Kumble suggested Hyderabad could again lean on Hinge for the crucial clash, potentially using him as a replacement for Harshal Patel in the playing XI. He also noted that Hinge dismissed Vaibhav Suryavanshi in his first IPL game, calling it a psychological advantage heading into the knockout.
“So I expect SRH might go with Hinge again in place of Harshal Patel for the eliminator. Hinge also dismissed Vaibhav Suryavanshi in his first game, which gives him a psychological edge going into the eliminator,” Kumble said.
With a berth in Qualifier 2 on the line, both teams now gear up for a knockout contest that Kumble believes could be defined by who delivers most reliably under pressure—especially in a match where small margins often decide everything.
