Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Smashes 65 Sixes to Break Chris Gayle’s IPL Record

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s IPL 2026 numbers have turned into a full-blown batting benchmark, with his latest surge underscoring just how dominant his power-hitting has been across situations, phases and match pressure. In total, he has struck 65 sixes in the tournament so far—more than any other batter has managed in a T20 competition—surpassing the mark set by Chris Gayle, who finished IPL 2012 with 59 maximums. The comparison is even starker when you look at balls faced: Gayle needed 456 deliveries to reach his total, while Sooryavanshi did it in 266.

His explosiveness isn’t only about end totals; it shows up in the speed of accumulation too. He took just 16 balls to complete his fifty against Sunrisers Hyderabad, a joint-fastest mark by any batter in IPL playoffs or knockout games. Suresh Raina had previously matched that 16-ball feat when he reached fifty against Kings XI Punjab in Qualifier 2 in 2014, and Sooryavanshi now joins him at the top.

Sooryavanshi’s season strike rate reads 242.85, built on 680 runs from 15 innings. He has become the first batter in any T20 tournament to score 600-plus runs while maintaining a strike rate of 200 or higher. The next-best comparison comes from Rilee Rossouw, whose 192.28 is the closest challenger in that category, with 623 runs in the 2022 T20 Blast.

On Wednesday, Sooryavanshi added another statement with 12 sixes in the innings—off only 29 balls. That tally is the joint-highest by any Indian batter in an IPL innings. He also matched his own earlier benchmark, having struck 12 maximums against SRH in Jaipur earlier this season.

Those 12 sixes on Wednesday were not just an innings record—he also set a new playoff/knockout benchmark for the most sixes by any batter in such a match. He moved past Shubman Gill, who had struck ten sixes against Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2 in 2023.

The scale of his clean striking can be seen from the pace of his early assault as well. His first ten sixes arrived in only 24 balls, the fewest deliveries any batter has required to reach double figures of maximums in the IPL. Gayle’s best earlier reference point was 27 balls, achieved when he hit his first ten sixes en route to 175* against Pune Warriors in 2013.

Even when zooming in on specific phases, Sooryavanshi’s impact remains extraordinary. On Wednesday, eight of his 12 sixes came in the powerplay, the most by a batter in this phase within an IPL innings. Five batters have previously hit seven sixes in an innings before, and that list includes Sooryavanshi himself—earlier this season against SRH in Jaipur—highlighting how consistently he can dominate the early overs.

His six-hitting ceiling has also been repeatedly reached. He has recorded four IPL innings featuring ten or more sixes, a joint-highest mark alongside Gayle. Notably, three of those four six-packed knocks have come in IPL 2026, making it the most such high-voltage innings by any batter within a single edition.

One of the clearest indicators of his ceiling in that standout knock was his strike rate. During his 29-ball 97, Sooryavanshi posted a strike rate of 334.48, which is the highest for any batter in an IPL innings of at least 90 runs. The previous record belonged to Rajat Patidar, who struck at 281.81 when he made 93* off 33 balls against Gujarat Titans on Tuesday.

His ability to sustain elite tempo in innings of substance has been just as consistent. He has now managed three instances of finishing with a 300-plus strike rate in an IPL innings where he scored 50 or more—again the most by any batter. Across all T20 cricket, this was his fourth time achieving that combination, equalling Kieron Pollard’s tally.

Sooryavanshi’s momentum also frequently starts early in the innings. He has completed his fifty in the powerplay on five occasions in the IPL, putting him just behind David Warner, who has done it six times. Four of those powerplay fifties came in 2026, matching Travis Head’s record of four in 2024 as the equal-most by any batter in an IPL season.

Perhaps the most telling part of his season is how he has been able to manufacture runs during the first phase of an innings. He has scored 490 runs in the first six overs—top by any batter in the IPL in that period. He has also moved beyond Warner’s 467-run total from the 2016 season. On top of that, Sooryavanshi holds the record for hitting the most sixes in an edition specifically in the first six overs, reinforcing that his power game is not just late-innings fireworks but a repeatable early advantage.
