Jos Buttler smashes 600th T20 six as he joins elite IPL six-hitters club

Jos Buttler marked a major T20 milestone in the IPL clash between Gujarat Titans and Delhi Capitals, smashing his 600th six in the format. The England batter became only the fifth player to reach the landmark, joining Chris Gayle (1,056), Kieron Pollard (981), Andre Russell (784) and Nicholas Pooran (712).

Quick facts

  • Buttler hit his 600th T20 six against Delhi Capitals.
  • He was the fifth man to reach 600 T20 sixes: Gayle, Pollard, Russell and Pooran also in the group.
  • In the innings, Buttler made 52 off 27 balls with five sixes and three fours (strike rate 192.59).
  • Five sixes in the first six overs were the second-best for a non-opener in an IPL innings, behind Suresh Raina’s 87 off 25 (with six sixes) in the 2014 Qualifier 2 at Wankhede.
  • Buttler’s T20 fifty ended a 16-match drought; his previous fifty had come in SA20 for Durban Super Giants vs Pretoria Capitals earlier this year.
  • Gujarat Titans finished on 210/4 in 20 overs, with Glenn Phillips (14*) and Rahul Tewatia (1*) unbeaten.
  • Mukesh Kumar led Delhi’s bowling with figures of 2/55; Kuldeep Yadav and Lungi Ngidi took one wicket each.
  • Delhi Capitals fell short by one run despite KL Rahul’s 92 off 52 and David Miller’s 41 off 20.

Buttler’s knock had a sharp start, with boundaries accelerating in the opening phase. His five sixes during the first six overs stand as the second-highest total by a non-opener in an IPL innings, trailing only Suresh Raina’s iconic 87 off 25 balls in the 2014 Qualifier 2 at Wankhede, when Raina cleared the ropes six times.

The innings also snapped a long wait for a half-century in T20 cricket. Buttler’s previous T20 fifty had been for Durban Super Giants against Pretoria Capitals in the SA20 earlier in the year, and he had then gone 16 matches without reaching 50.

There was, however, a reminder of recent inconsistency at the international level. Buttler endured a tough T20 World Cup campaign, accumulating 87 runs across eight innings at an average of 10.87.

Buttler’s T20 numbers this year

In IPL 2026 so far, he has managed 116 runs in three innings, averaging 38.66, while maintaining a strike rate above 156. Across all T20 matches this year, his tally has climbed to 422 runs from 19 innings, at 23.44, with a strike rate of 140.66. That includes two fifties, with a best score of 97*.

Gujarat Titans were forced into damage control early in the chase for a big total. After Sai Sudharsan departed for 12, Buttler and Shubman Gill put together a 60-run partnership to stabilise the innings.

From there, the tempo surged further as Gill connected well with Washington Sundar. Sundar struck 55 off 32, and the two batters shared a 104-run stand that propelled GT to 210/4 in their 20 overs. Glenn Phillips remained unbeaten on 14, while Rahul Tewatia finished not out on 1*.

Delhi Capitals had their moments, but wickets were shared rather than clustered. Mukesh Kumar was the most effective with 2/55, while Kuldeep Yadav and Lungi Ngidi each took a wicket as GT crossed the 200-run mark.

Chasing 211, Delhi delivered a tense, last-ball kind of finish. KL Rahul struck 92 off 52 to keep the chase alive, and David Miller’s 41 off 20 ensured the equation stayed close all the way to the final delivery.

In the end, DC came up just one run short, despite the late charge from Rahul and Miller. Gujarat Titans held their nerve to seal the win, with Delhi left to rue the narrowest of margins.
