KV Siddharth Retires as Player, Begins Coaching Journey

BENGALURU: In the early 2010s, Karnataka produced a wave of promising batters who made their mark through the state pathway. They progressed together from age-group cricket into the KSCA circuit, sparring in the same leagues, raising the standards of each other, and all aiming for the highly sought-after Karnataka senior cap. While Mayank Agarwal, Karun Nair, R Samarth and Shreyas Gopal broke into the senior ranks in quick succession, KV Siddharth continued to accumulate runs in the KSCA competitions and waited for his moment with patience.

That opportunity came during the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy season. Siddharth, then 25, made his Karnataka debut against Vidarbha. The opening outing was not a blockbuster—he managed 19 and 16—but he soon found his rhythm in a major pressure game versus Mumbai, striking a brilliant 166 at Belagavi. Nearly eight years after that breakthrough, Siddharth has now chosen to step away from domestic cricket as a player.

Even though his overall tally may look modest—31 first-class matches with 20 appearances for Karnataka, along with 28 List A games and 15 T20 contests split between Karnataka and Goa—his influence on Karnataka cricket was still substantial. Siddharth blended flair with stamina, and in his debut Ranji season he finished as Karnataka’s leading run-scorer, amassing 728 runs.

Known for a calm, understated nature and a team-first mindset, Siddharth earned strong respect inside the dressing room for consistently putting collective goals ahead of personal milestones. Still, the landscape of competition became tougher over time, and a couple of untimely injuries curtailed his chances, eventually leading him to shift his base to Goa.

In a heartfelt post on social media on Thursday, Siddharth wrote: “Walking away from cricket isn’t easy, because the game has been such a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember. I’ve had the privilege of representing Karnataka in all age groups, leading teams, winning championships, making memories, and most importantly, making friendships that will stay with me forever.”

He added, “Now it is time to give back to the sport that gave me everything.”

After hanging up his boots from domestic action, Siddharth has moved into coaching. His first assignment is with the KSCA Academy camps in Mysuru. Next, he is set to begin his franchise coaching journey at the Maharaja Trophy, starting next month.

Speaking about the transition, Siddharth said he had considered representing north-east teams in domestic cricket, but was “more excited about coaching.” He also expressed his desire to share his cricket knowledge and experience to help inspire others.
