MI Leadership Shake-Up Looms as Hardik Pandya Faces Captaincy Exit: Report

Hardik Pandya is reportedly set to give up the captaincy role at Mumbai Indians, in what is being framed as one of the IPL’s biggest leadership shake-ups. The change comes after a tough run under Pandya, who took over the MI job from Rohit Sharma ahead of the 2024 season. Under his captaincy, the five-time champions endured a difficult IPL 2026 campaign, losing 10 of their 14 matches and slipping to the ninth position.

Speculation around Pandya’s future as MI skipper had been growing through the season, with figures from the game and former players weighing in on whether he would continue in charge. That talk intensified further after MI’s campaign ended, when Pandya reportedly deactivated his Instagram account.

The report also suggests that even Pandya’s role within the franchise as a player is not yet settled. A source close to the setup indicated that the signs inside the camp pointed to management being hesitant about retaining him as captain. “There were enough indications across the season that the team management wasn’t particularly keen on keeping him as captain. There’s a clear buzz in the camp,” the report quoted a source as saying.

From the big return to mounting pressure

  1. Hardik Pandya, a captain who has previously won an IPL title with Gujarat Titans, returned to his earlier franchise as skipper amid major expectations.
  2. MI, whose last IPL triumph had come in 2020, viewed Pandya as Rohit Sharma’s natural successor.
  3. But the transition did not go as planned, and Pandya faced a hostile reception at the Wankhede Stadium, MI’s home venue, throughout IPL 2024.
  4. MI’s finishing position in IPL 2024—last among the 10 teams—only added to the pressure on the captaincy.

Squad star power, but results fell short

  1. Momentum improved in IPL 2025, with MI managing to reach the playoffs.
  2. With several senior India regulars in the mix—including Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma—IPL 2026 was widely expected to bring MI back to their best.
  3. Instead, the team struggled across the campaign.
  4. Bumrah, typically a strike bowler, was wicketless in many of his matches, while Yadav and Varma were described as failing to show consistent impact.
  5. Rohit also dealt with injuries during the season.

The report claimed it had spoken to “at least three people” within the MI environment. One of the points raised was a disconnect between the coaching staff’s guidance and what certain senior players were willing to execute. “The coaching staff was very clear in its message to the senior players: wherever they play, they need to be coachable. There were multiple instances where the staff suggested plans supported by data, but the players didn’t follow them,” a source said.

What comes next for MI and Hardik

With the season over, the report anticipates a period of internal review. “There will be serious introspection and discussion in the coming days. Every option will be weighed. Many questions need to be addressed. Going ahead, can Hardik be the captain? Does he stay in the team just as a player?” an MI insider reportedly said.
