IPL 2026: BCCI bans smart goggles over integrity and security concerns

The BCCI’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit has issued a clear directive to franchises taking part in the IPL 2026, warning that “Smart Goggles” must not be brought into or used during the tournament. The instruction, shared with teams through formal protocols, flags these devices as a potential threat to match integrity and security rules governing the Players and Match Officials Area (PMOA).

BCCI security protocol targets “Smart Goggles”

As per the BCCI guidelines circulated to franchises on May 18, the tournament’s security framework specifically prohibits smart sunglasses or goggles that enable advanced communication or recording capabilities. The warning covers equipment supplied by certain companies selling these “smart” eyewear products to players as well as support staff.

Why the devices are restricted under PMOA rules

The BCCI protocols explain that the “smart” eyewear in question can come with communication features such as live streaming, the ability to send and receive text messages, and audio or video calling through mobile data or Wi-Fi. Under the PMOA standards, such glasses or goggles are categorised as both an “Audio/Video recording device” and a “Communication Device.”

  • They may support live streaming.
  • They may allow sending and receiving text messages.
  • They may enable audio and video calling using mobile data or Wi-Fi.
  • Under PMOA standards, they are treated as an “Audio/Video recording device”.
  • Under PMOA standards, they are also treated as a “Communication Device”.

Match-day procedure and consequences for non-compliance

On match days, the BCCI’s circulated instructions require players and support staff to hand over these devices at entry to the PMOA. The devices must be deposited with the Security Liaison Officer, along with mobile phones and smartwatches. The protocols further state that any failure to follow this requirement will be treated as a breach of the rules, which could lead to potential penalties.

  • Players and support staff must deposit the smart goggles at PMOA entry on match days.
  • Deposits are to be made with the Security Liaison Officer.
  • The submission must include mobile phones and smartwatches as well.
  • Non-adherence will be treated as a violation of the protocols.
  • Violations may result in potential penalties.
