Sangakkara backs Vaibhav Sooryavanshi: IPL form makes him ready for India call-up

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has accelerated his push for an India T20I chance following a standout IPL campaign that has quickly turned him into one of the tournament’s most discussed young talents. At the age of 15, the Rajasthan Royals batter has taken centre stage by compiling 776 runs at a strike rate above 230, while repeatedly dismantling some of the league’s toughest bowling units.

Time and again, Sooryavanshi has been the driving force behind Rajasthan’s batting, rescuing the innings when they looked in trouble and delivering performances that swung matches in the Royals’ favour. He tried to continue that impact in Qualifier 2, where he produced a brilliant 96 to help his side reach a challenging total. Yet, despite his effort, the bowling unit could not hold up the score, and Rajasthan’s season ended there.

What has drawn even more attention than the runs themselves is the fearless style with which he has gone about his batting. Sooryavanshi has shown a level of confidence and composure that is uncommon for someone so young, quickly establishing himself as one of the prominent faces of the tournament. As a result, momentum for an India debut has been building, with many viewing it as only a matter of time before he earns an international opportunity.

Sangakkara backs Sooryavanshi for international cricket

Rajasthan Royals head coach Kumar Sangakkara was asked whether the teenager is ready for cricket at the international level. The former Sri Lanka captain said no one can truly be certain until a player gets the chance to perform on that stage, but he believes Sooryavanshi has already displayed enough quality against top-class opponents to suggest he can manage whatever comes next.

“You never really know if anyone is ready until they play. But with everything he has shown against some of the best bowlers in the world, I think he’s more than ready to take on any challenge that you throw at him. I’m sure he’ll get that call-up very, very soon,” Sangakkara said during the post-match media interaction.

Sangakkara praises the youngster’s maturity

In his assessment of Sooryavanshi’s breakthrough season, Sangakkara underlined the youngster’s temperament and his growing sense of responsibility. He pointed to how effectively the teenager handled the pressure of opening the batting, despite having little experience at the very highest level.

“He has batted with a lot of maturity and shouldered the responsibility of that opening partnership really well for us this season.
