Gill and Sai Sudharsan Power Gujarat Titans’ Dominant IPL Opening Pair

In Ahmedabad, Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan are doing far more than piling up runs—they are reshaping what an elite T20 opening alliance looks like. For yet another campaign, both have crossed the 700-run mark, pushing Gujarat Titans’ top pair into an exclusive bracket. Their steady, well-timed understanding at the top has placed them among the most productive batting partnerships the format has produced, echoing the dominance once owned by IPL greats such as Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers.

Gill and Sudharsan have now stacked up eight century stands for the opening wicket, which is the joint-highest mark in men’s T20 cricket, level with Pakistan’s Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan. Their combined IPL total of 2,944 runs also places them second on the all-time list of partnership aggregates in the league’s history, trailing only the 3,123 runs put together by Kohli and de Villiers between 2011 and 2020.

What makes their rise even more striking is how quickly it has happened. Their current dominance has taken shape since IPL 2022, the season when Sudharsan was still adjusting in Gujarat Titans’ debut era. Individually, the numbers have mirrored the partnership output. After Sudharsan finished last year as the Orange Cap winner with 759 runs and Gill ended fourth with 650, the duo have again taken control of the 2026 scoring race, with Gill striking 722 runs and Sudharsan 710—only Vaibhav Sooryavanshi sitting above them.

Gill has also edged the matchup in strike rate during the season, hitting at 163.71 compared with Sudharsan’s 159.55. The difference is especially noticeable in the powerplay, where Gill has scored at 159.20, while Sudharsan has managed 145.02 against his partner’s bowling-friendly start.

Despite the headline numbers, there has been some debate around Gujarat Titans’ reliance on this opening combination. Still, any doubts about their capacity to generate runs have never been justified — the duo continue to set the tone with the same intent, match after match.

Gill and Sai are classic top-order batters. They are not built around the idea of swinging from ball one; instead, they look to locate gaps and build pressure through proper shot selection. That approach was on full display during their 167-run partnership against Rajasthan Royals in Qualifier 2, where the structure of their innings looked as important as the final tally.

At the pre-final press conference in Mullanpur following Gujarat Titans’ win over RR, Gill spoke about how his bond with Sai has grown both inside and outside the cricket environment. “We spend a lot of time together in the IPL—on the field, off the field as well—and then we are in the Test team too, so we have a lot of conversations,” he said to reporters.

Gill added that the discussions go beyond the technical side of the sport. “There are things we talk about about cricket beyond cricket. Not only for them, but I think there are many players in our squad that play for the country, and hopefully we’re going to be together for a long period. It’s very important for us to know each other well, to have a great equation, and I believe that naturally carries over into on-field performances,” he said.

Gill was equally emphatic about Sudharsan’s strengths, describing the left-hander’s ability to maintain the same intensity across different phases of the season. “When I first started playing the IPL, one challenge I faced was keeping the matches at the same intensity. I think that is one of Sai’s biggest strengths,” he remarked.

He further explained why that consistency matters in a tournament as demanding as the IPL. “You play so many matches, and there can be days where mentally you don’t feel up to the mark or physically you don’t feel up to the mark, but to maintain the same intensity in every game and stay consistent with preparation, routines and day-to-day habits isn’t easy. He’s someone who is very consistent with his routines, even away from cricket. That’s also what makes him consistent on the field,” Gill added.

Gujarat Titans’ director of cricket Vikram Solanki also pointed to the work ethic behind their run-scoring surge. “It is on the back of a lot of hard work. I can only imagine all the work Shubman has put in throughout his career to reach where he is with the bat. He’s an exceptional young man, and you also have to realise he’s still young,” Solanki said. “For him to play the cricket he plays and bat the way he bats is just phenomenal.”

Solanki then spoke about Sudharsan’s approach as well, highlighting how the left-hander’s development has been shaped by learning from Gill while still keeping his own batting identity. “And Sai is no less so. He might be a little younger in his journey, but you can see he takes a fine example from Shubman and understands that what you and I might call batsmanship—traditional batting—has to be part of his skill set,” he said.

He also stressed that the duo can shift gears when the situation demands it. “There is no doubt in my mind that if a scenario requires them to quicken the run rate, and the wicket supports that kind of play, then they can adapt. I think that’s their best quality—the ability to adjust given any situation, any wicket, any opposition,” Solanki added. “Along with the fact that they have an immense appetite for run-scoring. Those are good habits to have.”

Records have followed Gill and Sudharsan throughout this season, but the next challenge is likely to matter even more than statistics and milestones: what lies ahead in the final. One last partnership this campaign, and one more statement at the top, could be the difference between a brilliant run of form and a title-winning finish.
