Rayudu pinpoints KL Rahul’s key test: the mindset behind his big hits

Ambati Rayudu believes KL Rahul’s biggest challenge has never been his ability to find the ropes, but rather the mental approach that decides when and how he unleashes his boundary-hitting. Speaking on ESPNcricinfo’s TimeOut show, Rayudu pointed to Rahul’s 92 off 52 balls in Delhi Capitals’ one-run loss to Gujarat Titans in Delhi on Wednesday.

Rayudu praised the way Rahul paced his innings during the chase of 211 in Ahmedabad. “Initially he was conservative, getting a feel for the conditions,” Rayudu said. “Then he turned it on beautifully, and perhaps that’s exactly what his role is for Delhi—bat deep as part of the plan.”

In Wednesday’s run chase, Rahul’s start looked measured before the acceleration arrived. He was 20 off 17 at one point, but moved to his half-century in 29 balls, including a sharp burst against Prasidh Krishna.

Rayudu also highlighted a specific moment that swung the tempo. During the over in which Delhi lost their first wicket, Rahul struck a 4, followed by 6, 6, and then another 4 off Krishna—an indication of the kind of attacking control he can bring once he’s set.

Mindset over mechanics

“We all know that once he gets in, he has the game to play a boundary shot against any delivery,” Rayudu said. “That has been his hallmark over the years. The real question has always been his mindset—how and when he chooses to go after it.”

He added that Rahul’s skill-set extends across bowling styles and lengths, which shapes the tactical thinking around his innings. “He has the ability to take on spinners, the fast bowlers, and every type of length,” Rayudu said. “So the challenge isn’t the shot-making—it’s the strategy he decides to walk out with.”

Against Gujarat Titans, Rahul leaned into that approach by looking to push the chase into the final over. He kept DC in contention with periodic boundaries, but wickets kept falling at the other end as he tried to carry the innings forward. Despite the narrow defeat, he ended with the top individual score in IPL 2026 so far, moving past his teammate Sameer Rizvi.

Rayudu said the intent was clear from the start of the innings. “Today he wanted to bat deep,” he noted. “He wanted to take it right to the end, and he did a fantastic job. And don’t forget, he played a beautiful innings.”

Rahul’s season had begun with early setbacks, with scores of 0 and 1 in his first two matches. Delhi Capitals, however, sit with two wins from their opening three fixtures, and they will next travel to Chepauk to take on Chennai Super Kings on Saturday.
