Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s Orange Cap triumph felt almost certain. In the final at Ahmedabad on Sunday night, Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan required 55 and 67 runs respectively to overhaul the race, but both batters were dismissed early—each falling cheaply within the first four overs. With that, Sooryavanshi was crowned the undisputed leading run-scorer of the 2026 Indian Premier League season.
Coming into the finale, Sooryavanshi had already made his mark in the second qualifier on Friday, striking 96 off 47 deliveries. That innings pushed his season total to 776 runs across 16 matches, at an average of 48.50 and a strike rate of 237.31. After that burst, the Orange Cap conversation naturally shifted to Gill and Sudharsan, but neither delivered when it mattered most.
It was a remarkable achievement for the young batter. This was only his second season in the IPL, yet he became the youngest player in league history to lift the prestigious honour. Throughout the campaign, he produced consistent impact and kept stacking up milestones along the way.
Sooryavanshi smashed 72 sixes in the tournament, the most by any player in IPL history. The previous record stood at 59, set by Chris Gayle for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2012. He also went on to become the quickest to reach 1000 IPL runs in terms of balls faced during his second-qualifier knock against Gujarat Titans, needing just 440 deliveries to hit the milestone. In innings count, he was tied for second place with former Mumbai Indians batter Lendl Simmons, with both requiring 23 innings to reach 1000 runs.
Even Sachin Tendulkar was impressed by what Sooryavanshi has been able to do. The season, in many ways, matched what the batter and his family would have hoped for—sustained performances, big moments, and a steady rise from the early stages to the business end of the tournament.
From Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar to Ravi Shastri and Ian Bishop, there has been no shortage of high praise for Sooryavanshi. With India set to travel to Ireland next month for two T20Is, followed by a five-match T20I tour of England, there appears to be little reason not to consider him for the touring squads.
Sooryavanshi’s success is not a coincidence. His preparation has been highlighted as disciplined and relentless. Recently, he spoke about his IPL routine: after games, he returns to the hotel and tries to rest as much as possible to recover fully. He also watches videos on YouTube, but avoids bowling footage to limit anxiety about specific bowlers. In his approach, he comes across as grounded and focused—someone who keeps everything simple and prioritises his cricketing goals.
Earlier in the season, questions had lingered about his credentials for India selection, but those doubts faded during the final stretch. In the last couple of weeks, he piled on runs in crucial matches, delivering the performances that shifted opinions. A star has truly arrived.
