Ireland Edge West Indies by 1 Run in DLS Thriller in Women’s T20I Tri-Series

Ireland climbed to the summit of the Women’s T20I Tri-Nation Series standings after beating West Indies by a single run through the DLS method in the fourth match at Clontarf. Rain cut short Ireland’s chase, leaving the hosts marginally ahead on the revised DLS target when play was called off.

The triumph followed Ireland’s win over Pakistan on Sunday and also represented their first-ever T20I victory against West Indies.

West Indies set the target

  1. West Indies were asked to bat and finished their 20 overs on 141 for 8.
  2. Orla Prendergast was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 2 for 26, striking in the late phase by removing Aaliyah Alleyne and Zaida James.
  3. Ava Canning made early inroads as well, taking 2 for 11 in her four overs and dismissing Hayley Matthews and Qiana Joseph at the start of the innings.
  4. West Indies had slumped to 53 for 5 at one point, with Stafanie Taylor retiring hurt on nine.
  5. Shemaine Campbelle (21) and Jannillea Glasgow (36) stitched together a 44-run partnership to steady the innings and help West Indies reach 141 for 8.

Ireland’s chase cut short by rain

  1. Ireland’s run chase began poorly as Shawnisha Hector struck twice in the opening over, leaving the hosts two wickets down almost immediately.
  2. Prendergast then took charge, staying unbeaten on 71 off 46 balls and striking 11 fours along with a six.
  3. Her innings contributed close to 72% of Ireland’s total, keeping the chase alive even as wickets continued to fall at the other end.
  4. Ireland were 5 down in 10.3 overs, but Prendergast continued to find scoring opportunities.
  5. A sixth-wicket stand with Louise Little followed, and although Little managed only five runs from her first seven deliveries, she struck a vital boundary right at the start of the 15th over.
  6. That shot carried Ireland to 99 for 5 after 14.1 overs, surpassing the DLS par score of 98.
  7. Rain then brought an end to the match and it could not be restarted.
  8. Because Ireland were one run ahead on DLS at the time of stoppage, they were awarded the win.

Ireland and West Indies are level on two wins from three matches, while Pakistan remain winless after two games. Ireland’s next assignment is against Pakistan at the same venue on Thursday.

Brief scores: West Indies 141/8 (Jannillea Glasgow 36). Ireland 99/5 in 14.1 overs (Orla Prendergast 71*; Shawnisha Hector 2-21). Result: Ireland won by 1 run via DLS.
