Sachin’s Take on RCB’s IPL 2026 Dominance and PBKS’ Knockout Struggles

Royal Challengers Bengaluru once again ended the IPL 2026 season at the top, finishing first in the league stage for a second successive year. The Rajat Patidar-led group once more proved that they can turn consistency into silverware, while Gujarat Titans claimed the runner-up spot after a campaign that stayed impressively steady throughout. Rajasthan Royals, who were eliminated in Qualifier 2, offered plenty of reasons for optimism, leaning on the growth of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. Sunrisers Hyderabad—who finished as the fourth-best side—also experienced their share of influential spells, supported by a batting lineup capable of changing the tempo of matches.

However, the story at the start of IPL 2026 belonged to Punjab Kings. Under Shreyas Iyer’s leadership, the franchise built early momentum by remaining unbeaten in their first seven matches and climbing to 13 points. That strong run was followed by a dramatic reversal: they lost each of the next six fixtures. Although Punjab Kings managed to win their final match of the league stage, it still did not secure a place for the side, leaving the Ricky Ponting-coached team short of what they needed.

Sachin Tendulkar has since examined what led to Punjab Kings’ collapse. He highlighted the initial intent and bravery the team showed, saying that they brought “wonderful energy” to the competition. Tendulkar also pointed out that momentum matters in long tournaments, but emphasized that the real differentiator eventually becomes maintaining the right process rather than becoming overly attached to immediate outcomes. In a Reddit post, he wrote: “Punjab Kings brought wonderful energy to the tournament. Their cricket was positive, brave and often game-changing. Momentum plays a crucial role in lengthy tournaments. Eventually, in such a fast-moving tournament, it boils down to process and not getting attached to results. Punjab focused more on process in the first half and more on results in the second,”

While discussing Punjab Kings, Tendulkar also offered strong praise for Gujarat Titans. He singled out their steadiness, describing how they manage to stay within a narrow, reliable performance range across an entire season. He acknowledged that the IPL is naturally unpredictable, yet said GT rarely drift far from their approach even when results swing. In his words: “What stands out about the Gujarat Titans is their ability to operate within a remarkably consistent performance band across an entire season. The IPL is inherently volatile, but GT rarely stray too far from their method, even when results fluctuate. They minimize both peaks and troughs, staying close to their brand of cricket more consistently than most teams. Over a long tournament, that ability to control uncertainty often proves more valuable than occasional bursts of brilliance or isolated match-winning performances,”

Tendulkar then broadened the reflection, looking back at IPL 2026 with the reminder that tournaments are seldom defined purely by their beginnings. He noted that, more than once during the season, the standings at the halfway point painted a different picture from what the final table eventually showed. He credited the evolution of teams and players as the campaign unfolded, saying that adjustments were made, performances improved, and fresh solutions appeared as the competition progressed. He concluded with: “Looking back at IPL 2026, I was reminded that tournaments are rarely defined by how they begin. More than once this season, the table told a very different story at the halfway mark than it did at the end. Teams adjusted, players improved, and new solutions emerged as the competition progressed. The game demands constant evolution, and that is part of what makes it so fascinating to watch.”
