England captain Ben Stokes has backed fast bowler Jofra Archer after the pacer faced criticism for missing the opening Test against New Zealand. Archer will not be available for the first match at Lord’s, having recently finished his IPL stint with Rajasthan Royals, the franchise that reached the playoffs before being eliminated.
Archer’s absence has sparked debate among some former players and analysts, with concerns that England should treat him as a top priority because he is under a central contract with the national team. There have also been questions about his readiness for the second Test later this month, with his availability still under scrutiny.
Stokes acknowledged that sections of the public and former cricketers may feel frustrated, but argued that the current era of cricket is fundamentally different from the one that existed years ago. He pointed to the growth of franchise leagues worldwide, which now give players additional pathways to stay involved in the game beyond international duty.
“A lot of the points that people would be making around Jof and that situation I think are to do with the landscape back when they were playing,” Stokes said. “It’s completely different now. There’s opportunities for cricketers now that there wasn’t 10, 15, 20 years ago. Yes, in an ideal situation, it would be unbelievably great to have everyone who you want available every single opportunity. But it’s not the way of cricket at the moment. There’s so much more out there for players.”
The England skipper stressed that teams must adjust to the modern cricket calendar rather than expect players to be available for every international match at all times. He also warned that mishandling situations like Archer’s could ultimately discourage talented players from participating in international cricket.
“There is a situation where it could get messy, and players like Jofra might not play for England again if you handle it a different way,” Stokes said. “And that’s not good for anyone.”
Stokes added that Archer has repeatedly shown his commitment to representing England. “Jof, I think, has shown that he is committed and loves playing for England. Just because he’s not available for this first test match does not change that.”
Archer is currently taking a short break, with a further assessment planned ahead of the remaining fixtures in the series.
