Ben Stokes Defends Jofra Archer Over IPL Delay From England Selection

England captain Ben Stokes has thrown his weight behind fast bowler Jofra Archer after the pacer missed the opening Test against New Zealand because of his IPL schedule. Archer stayed with the Rajasthan Royals through the end of their run, with the campaign finishing in Qualifier 2 against the Gujarat Titans last Friday. With that outcome settling the Royals’ season, the timing meant Archer was unable to link up with England for their first Test at Lord’s, which starts on Thursday.

Rajasthan’s loss brought an end to their hopes of reaching the final and lifting the title, but it also left Archer with very limited chances to return to the England camp in time for the first match. Stokes, speaking at Lord’s on Wednesday, said he understands the frustration that comes with players juggling different formats and competitions, while also pointing to the bigger picture of how the modern game is structured.

“I totally understand people’s frustrations around it, but there is another side to it,” Stokes said. He highlighted that the debate around Archer’s absence has to be viewed in the context of where cricket has been and where it is heading. “A lot of it has to do with the landscape of cricket and where it is at the moment. A lot of points people are making around Jof and that situation are to do with the landscape when they were playing,” he added, before insisting that the situation is not the same as it was a decade or two ago. “But it’s completely different now. There’s opportunities for cricketers now that there was not 10, 15, 20 years ago.”

Stokes also acknowledged that England would prefer to have their first-choice group available for every assignment, yet he argued that the current reality of professional cricket does not always allow that. “Yes, in an ideal situation it would be unbelievably great to have everyone who you want available at every single opportunity. That is not the way of cricket at the moment. There is so much more out there for players,” he said.

Turning to the question of Archer’s commitment, Stokes stressed that nobody should doubt his desire to play for England, even if the IPL schedule keeps him away from certain windows. He cautioned that adopting a hard-line stance could backfire, potentially discouraging players and harming the national setup in the long run. “There is a situation where it could get messy and players like Jofra might not play for England again if you handle it in a different way, and that is not good for anyone,” Stokes warned. “Jofra has shown that he’s committed and loves playing for England. Just because he’s not available for this first Test match does not change that,” he concluded.
