Kolkata Knight Riders will aim to finally get their IPL 2026 campaign moving when they take on Lucknow Super Giants at Eden Gardens later tonight. The match carries extra weight for KKR because, along with Chennai Super Kings, they have yet to register a win this season. Their early campaign has been disrupted by rain and poor execution, leaving them searching for momentum just as the competition enters a crucial phase.
KKR’s first points on the board came from a washed-out encounter against Punjab Kings. At the moment play was halted, they were 25 for 2 in the fourth over, a situation that naturally limited any chance to build momentum or create a meaningful score. The broader story, however, remains unchanged: in their opening two matches, KKR failed to put up a competitive showing. Against Mumbai Indians, they were chased down 221 with five balls remaining, and then against Sunrisers Hyderabad they were beaten by 65 runs after allowing the opposition to post 226 for 8.
Lucknow, meanwhile, arrive with a win in their recent memory, even if it did not come in a dominant fashion. In their previous game against SRH, LSG chased 157 successfully with just one ball left in the chase. Captain Rishabh Pant anchored the effort with an unbeaten 68 off 50 balls, but the margin of victory suggested they were made to work for the result rather than coasting through.
Before that, LSG had also endured a tough season start, losing to Delhi Capitals. Batting first, they managed 141, and when DC slipped to 26 for 4, the game looked set to tilt toward Lucknow. Instead, Delhi staged a remarkable turnaround and completed the chase by six wickets with 17 balls to spare.
With both teams carrying pressure from their earlier results, there is no obvious standout favourite heading into tonight’s contest. For KKR, the biggest headache is Cameron Green. Bought for ₹25.20 crore, the Australian all-rounder is currently dealing with an injury and cannot bowl, and with the bat he has not yet looked completely settled. Their captain, Ajinkya Rahane, has also faced criticism and is under scrutiny for his performances. Rahane has tried to respond to the doubters, but the most effective answer will be on-field—through runs and by providing the kind of leadership that translates into victories.
Lucknow’s relief after the win over SRH may be tempered by the wider context around Pant’s arrival. Pant has already been part of a rollercoaster narrative since moving into the LSG setup, including the pressure that comes with being brought in to reverse the team’s fortunes. Last season, LSG ended up seventh, and despite the recent breakthrough, they have not offered much reassurance in the current campaign either. With Pant back at the centre of things, the captain will likely feel the weight of expectation to convert the narrow success into something more consistent.
The weather forecast for today is not expected to cause major issues. On the selection front, KKR are hopeful that Sunil Narine will return to the XI. However, Varun Chakravarthy, who is nursing a finger injury, may again be forced to miss out tonight. Lucknow are expected to stick with the same group that beat SRH, though the fast bowler Mayank Yadav could miss another match. So far this season, Mayank has not played.
