Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have reshaped their IPL 2026 roster with the addition of South Africa’s all-rounder George Linde, named as the replacement for Sri Lanka’s Wanindu Hasaranga. Hasaranga, who is 28 years old, has been ruled out of the tournament after sustaining a hamstring injury during Sri Lanka’s first match at the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup. The knock has forced LSG to act quickly and secure cover ahead of the next phase of their campaign.
LSG had already signalled that they were preparing for the possibility of an absence. Director of Cricket Tom Moody had indicated that the franchise were working on contingency plans, saying they were “preparing for the fact that he isn’t going to be able to join us,” while also noting that replacement options were being explored and would be communicated within a short window of 24 to 48 hours.
The man brought in, Linde, is a left-handed batter who also bowls slow left-arm spin. For Linde, this will be his first appearance in the IPL, marking a significant step in his T20 journey. He arrives with a wealth of international experience, having represented South Africa across formats and built a reputation by featuring in multiple T20 competitions around the world.
In T20 internationals, Linde has played 37 matches, collecting more than 400 runs and claiming 35 wickets. That combination underlines his role as a genuine all-round contributor—someone who can provide overs in the middle phase while also offering batting depth when required. While his most recent output has been relatively subdued, including a low-key stretch against New Zealand, his broader career numbers remain compelling, including a tally of over 200 wickets in T20 cricket.
LSG have secured Linde at his base price, a move that reflects the balance they are trying to strike within their squad. With captain Rishabh Pant at the helm, the franchise will look to make the most of the new-look unit as they continue their season. LSG are coming off a close win, and their next assignment is against Gujarat Titans at their home venue in Lucknow.
Linde’s arrival is expected to widen LSG’s options with both bat and ball, giving them additional flexibility as they navigate the tournament. The franchise will hope that his all-round skill set and experience can translate into key contributions in the matches ahead.
