RCB Struggle as RR Hit 202/4, Matching IPL’s Worst 200+ Defense Record

Royal Challengers Bengaluru have now matched the IPL’s joint-worst record when defending a 200-plus score, and the latest example came in Guwahati. Rajasthan Royals posted a chase total of 202 for 4, putting pressure on RCB’s ability to close out big totals at the death.

Quick facts

  • 7 times RCB have lost while defending a 200-plus target in the IPL (joint-most, level with Punjab Kings).
  • 202 for 4 RR’s total in the Guwahati chase versus RCB.
  • 97 for 1 RR’s powerplay score on Friday (their best ever in the IPL).
  • 3 fifties by Vaibhav Sooryavanshi under 18 balls in the IPL (most by any batter).
  • 107 runs added by RCB after the fall of their sixth wicket.

The 202-run chase was only RR’s second 200-plus total against RCB in the league. Their other such outing came back in 2018, when they hit 217 for 4 in Bengaluru against the same opposition.

RR’s start set the tone immediately. Their score of 97 for 1 in the powerplay on Friday was a franchise high for the Royals in IPL cricket. Previously, their best in this phase had been 89 for 1 against Punjab Kings in 2025.

Sooryavanshi’s rapid impact

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi continued to turn starts into lightning innings. He has 3 IPL fifties made in under 18 balls, which is the most by any batter in the competition. Six other players have managed two such quick fifties each in that same “under 18 balls” bracket.

Looking at the overall pattern, Sooryavanshi has four T20 half-centuries in fewer than 18 deliveries. Abhishek Sharma leads with 5 in that category, while Chris Gayle and Kieron Pollard also have 4 apiece based on the database used for these figures.

Friday also marked the second time in IPL history that Sooryavanshi has struck a 15-ball fifty. The other batter to have done it twice is Jake Fraser-McGurk, with both of his 15-ball fifties arriving in the 2024 season.

Another standout number was the pace of the key partnership. The alliance between Sooryavanshi and Dhruv Jurel produced a run rate of 17.51, with Jurel contributing 108 runs from just 6.1 overs. That makes it the second-fastest century stand in IPL history by run rate, behind Abhishek and Travis Head’s 131 off 6.2 overs against Delhi Capitals in 2024, which had been scored at 20.68 runs per over.

Strike-rate milestones

Sooryavanshi has also been piling up high-impact scores at extreme tempo. He has 3 T20 innings of 50-plus runs at a strike rate of 300 or more, which is a competition-leading effort. Only Pollard has as many or more such knocks, with 4 to his name, and among Sooryavanshi’s 50-plus contributions at triple digits, two have come in the IPL.

Fraser-McGurk is the only other player to have recorded two such 50-plus scores at a strike rate above 300 in the league.

RCB’s fight after the sixth wicket

Even though RCB ultimately suffered the setback, their response after losing momentum was notable. They added 107 runs after the fall of their sixth wicket, which is the second-highest such total by any side in IPL history.

The top mark still belongs to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), who struck 115 against Rajasthan Royals in 2013. In that match, SRH finished with 144 for 9 after having been 29 for 6 earlier.

RCB also managed three separate partnerships worth 30-plus runs after the fall of their sixth wicket, making this only the second time such a pattern has occurred in men’s T20 cricket.
