The PSL 2026 has delivered yet another slice of off-field tension, with controversies continuing to pile up across the league’s 11th season. From allegations of ball interference to players being disciplined for failing to follow security-related guidelines, the tournament has hardly offered a quiet moment. The most recent flashpoint landed during the Karachi clash between Quetta Gladiators and Rawalpindiz at the National Stadium on Friday, and it erupted in the middle of Rawalpindiz’s run chase.
The incident unfolded in the ninth over of the pursuit, when Daryl Mitchell—batting in the middle order—took exception to Usman Tariq repeatedly pausing during his delivery stride. The New Zealand batter appeared visibly frustrated by the spinner’s repeated stop-start action. Mitchell responded in his own way: he backed away from his crease twice and refused to take the strike against the bowler, effectively protesting the pause before the ball was released.
As the over progressed, Tariq returned to the crease and followed his familiar pattern, using a stutter and halting his momentum before delivering. Mitchell, however, was not willing to play through it. He stepped away from his stumps on both occasions, signalling to the officials that he felt unprepared to face the upcoming delivery, forcing the match to pause for clarification on the pitch.
At that point, the on-field umpires had to intervene and explain the situation to Mitchell. During the same spell, Ramiz Raja—working as a commentator—did not hold back his frustration. He pushed the batter to be ready and follow the proper process, questioning whether the umpires had to address Tariq’s action while also insisting that Mitchell adjust accordingly.
Raja’s comments made it clear he felt Mitchell needed to take a firmer stance within the rules. “Can he withdraw from his action? I think the umpires have to sort this out. And I think he’s got to be ready. Daryl Mitchell has got to be better than that,” Raja said. The simmering dispute is not entirely new for Tariq, either. During the T20 World Cup 2026, pauses in his bowling action drew significant attention, with analysts and former players debating whether the action met the legal requirements.
Adding another viewpoint, former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin said he does not see any problem with Tariq’s action. Ashwin suggested that batters should rely on the Laws of the Game to handle the situation and, if they are uncertain or unsettled by the pause, they are entitled to withdraw. He also noted that Tariq had been cleared by the ICC twice, with no concerns raised about the legality of his bowling action.
While the chase brought drama, the result belonged to Quetta. The Gladiators defended their total of 182/6 to win by 61 runs. Tariq bowled his four overs for 23 runs and accounted for Abdullah Fazal and Mubasir Khan, delivering key breakthroughs for Quetta. Saud Shakeel and Jahandad Khan also made major impacts, each taking two wickets as Rawalpindiz were restricted to 121 all out, ending their chase well short of the target.
