Shreyas Iyer’s 69* Guides Punjab Kings to 6-Wicket Win Over SRH

Shreyas Iyer once again showed why he is valued as both a captain and a batter, steering Punjab Kings to a convincing six-wicket triumph over Sunrisers Hyderabad in an IPL match on Saturday. With the chase in sight, he anchored the innings with an unbeaten 69 off just 33 balls, finishing the contest with seven deliveries still left. Punjab’s pursuit of 220 was powered by a quick start at the top, and then tightened up by smart bowling when Hyderabad tried to accelerate late.

Hyderabad’s 219/6: Abhishek Sharma sets the tone

Sunrisers Hyderabad posted 219 for six after being sent in, largely thanks to an explosive spell from Abhishek Sharma. He struck 74 off 28 deliveries, taking the game away from Punjab’s bowlers with a rapid burst that laid the platform for a competitive total.

  • Abhishek Sharma hit 74 off 28 balls to drive SRH to 219 for six.
  • Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh later replied in the chase with an opening stand of 99 runs.
  • Abhishek and Travis Head added 120 runs as an opening partnership in just 8.1 overs after Hyderabad were sent in.

Before the innings reached its second gear, Abhishek and his partner Travis Head attacked from the outset. After Head contributed 38 off 23 balls, the pair continued to carve up the powerplay, leaving PBKS scrambling to slow the scoring rate.

PBKS bowlers respond: wickets and late control

Despite Hyderabad’s early momentum, Punjab Kings made a strong comeback with the ball. Shashank Singh’s spell proved crucial as he removed both openers within the same over. That intervention changed the rhythm of the chase, considering SRH had been 120 without loss at the start of the ninth over.

  • Shashank Singh returned figures of 2/20 in three overs, taking both openers in one over.
  • Xavier Bartlett delivered a standout final over, conceding only five runs in four overs of work (1/42).
  • Abhishek Sharma finished with eight sixes and five fours.

As the innings drew to a close, the home side kept pushing for control, and the late over from Bartlett ensured Hyderabad did not add any further breathing space beyond the 219-run mark.

Punjab chase: Iyer’s finish and a perfect start

In reply, Punjab Kings made the start they needed, reaching 93 without loss during the powerplay. The opening duo of Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh attacked continuously, striking boundaries and keeping the tempo high against the SRH bowling setup.

  • PBKS reached 93/0 in the powerplay.
  • Priyansh Arya made 57 off 20 balls.
  • Prabhsimran Singh scored 51 off 25 balls.

Early overs were especially favourable for Punjab. Harsh Dubey conceded 18 runs in his first over, giving the batters the platform to press forward. Prabhsimran also launched a couple of sixes, including one struck against Jaydev Unadkat, while Eshan Malinga leaked 17 runs.

Momentum then surged even further. Priyansh Arya punished Harshal Patel with a sequence of 6, 6, 4, 4, racing to a fifty in only 16 deliveries. Although Shivang Kumar sparked a recovery for SRH by taking three wickets, Shreyas Iyer ensured the chase stayed on track and ultimately completed the job for PBKS.

Key powerplay moments and SRH’s batting plan

Hyderabad’s innings was built on quick striking in the opening phase. Abhishek Sharma began aggressively, taking 24 runs off Arshdeep with two fours and two maximums. The boundaries included a straight six and another hit over third man off a top edge.

  • Abhishek hit two fours and two sixes off Arshdeep, including a straight maximum and a top-edge six over third man, as SRH added 24 in the over.
  • Marco Jansen gave away 16 runs in his first over, helping SRH reach 60/0 after four overs.
  • Abhishek reached his half-century in 18 balls with a six over long-on off a Vyshak Vijaykumar slower ball.
  • Two balls later, a low full toss was struck over long-on for another maximum, taking SRH to 84/0 in five overs—the best powerplay score at this venue.

Abhishek also received a hug from Head before both continued the acceleration. Head then struck three consecutive boundaries, while Abhishek hammered one over deep midwicket for a six to bring SRH to 100 inside the powerplay.

With Punjab’s front-line seamers leaking runs, Shreyas Iyer brought in Shashank Singh and spinner Yuzvendra Chahal to slow the scoring. Shashank conceded only six runs in his first over, and Chahal allowed just three runs in his first five balls before Abhishek danced down the wicket to hit a big six.

Punjab’s captaincy also produced breakthroughs at the right time. Shashank Singh provided the first breakthrough by bowling an innocuous delivery that Head struck straight to the fielder at long-on. Shashank then struck again as Abhishek was caught by Arshdeep after driving a fuller-length ball but failing to clear the boundary.

As the chase moved toward its conclusion, Shreyas gave Chahal another over and, in the context of the game, limited SRH by conceding only nine runs. Despite SRH’s earlier firepower, the innings ended with two key dismissals: Ishan Kishan went for 27 off 17 balls, caught off Arshdeep, while Heinrich Klaasen was out for 39 off 33 in the final over.
