CHENNAI: Chennai Super Kings produced a rare, eyebrow-raising decision during their IPL 2026 encounter with Delhi Capitals at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Saturday, a moment that left many spectators and viewers visibly shaken. With the game in the balance and the innings flowing at Chepauk, CSK opted to retire out young Ayush Mhatre even though he had been playing fluently and had reached 59. The choice was made in the final phase of a high-scoring CSK innings, and it didn’t take long for the reaction to spill over across social media.
Mhatre had been central to the platform CSK built, striking 59 off 36 balls while mixing composed shot-making with bursts of attacking intent. Just as importantly, he combined effectively with Sanju Samson, and that partnership helped CSK keep accelerating. Samson then took control of the chase of runs himself, finishing unbeaten on 115. By the end of their 20 overs, Chennai posted a commanding 212/2, setting a target that put pressure on Delhi right from the start of the innings.
Given the momentum and the scoreboard advantage, the decision to retire Mhatre in the 18th over naturally drew more attention than usual. The youngster was applauded and patted by teammates as he walked back, and the change at the crease came immediately. Shivam Dube, a recognised power option, was sent in right away, underscoring CSK’s plan to squeeze maximum runs from the death overs rather than continue with a batter who was already well set.
Dube responded with intent, striking 20 off just 10 deliveries and ensuring CSK’s run-rate stayed firmly above 10 an over. On paper, the tactical logic was clear—use the most aggressive option when the final overs demand a heavier scoring rate. Yet for many fans, the timing felt strange: they questioned why a batter who was settled and nearing a potential bigger landmark was taken off at such a crucial stage.
Retire-outs are not completely unknown in the IPL, and they have been used strategically in different eras. Still, it remains uncommon, particularly when the player being retired is in rhythm and delivering at a brisk pace. In this case, Mhatre’s contribution made the call stand out even further, turning a calculated move into a talking point.
It also added to a small historical set of retire-outs in IPL records, a list that has previously featured names such as Ravichandran Ashwin, Atharva Taide, Sai Sudharsan, Tilak Varma, and Devon Conway. Even so, Mhatre’s situation stood out most because of the match context and the solid manner in which he had helped set up CSK’s total.
