Gaikwad Hits Back: CSK’s Bowling Yet to Find the X-Factor, Plans Clicked

After Chennai Super Kings (CSK) edged past Delhi Capitals (DC), Ruturaj Gaikwad admitted that CSK’s bowling still hasn’t fully found an “X-factor” that consistently makes things happen on demand. However, he pointed to the side’s efforts to stay sharp in planning and execution—an approach that finally clicked at Chepauk, where the five-time champions had been stuck in a grim stretch of six straight defeats at home. This time, the fortress stirred back to life, powered by a commanding hundred from Sanju Samson and a four-wicket spell from all-rounder Jamie Overton, helping CSK collect their maiden points of the season and deliver what looked like their most rounded outing yet after three consecutive losses.

Speaking at the post-match presentation, Gaikwad praised Samson’s century and explained how a focus on bowling more aggressively—especially by targeting the right lengths—shifted the momentum in CSK’s favour. “Feels good to finally get the win. Great performance. Always felt that coming here, we had been batting well. To post 200-210, when the wicket is on the slower side, we were showing good signs. One of those knocks where Sanju took on the opposition, played a magnificent knock. Ayush (Mhatre) also. But today was about the bowling. Taking wickets, bowling aggressive lengths,” Gaikwad said.

Gaikwad also elaborated on the mindset behind CSK’s bowling adjustments as the tournament has progressed. “We do not have that X-Factor in the bowling, but we have been discussing on how to be more effective and more proactive. In the last few games, we were almost there. Some big overs cost us. Bowling-wise, we were on the mark tonight. We were set back in the powerplay but we came back after it,” he added.

In closing, the CSK opener expressed his appreciation for the support from the home crowd, despite the team’s difficult run that has followed the previous season. “That is what this side of the country is – wonderful people and loving the franchise,” Gaikwad concluded.

CSK’s turnaround began with their batting first. Put into bat by DC, Samson produced a ruthless 115 not out off 56 deliveries, striking 15 fours and clearing the ropes four times. Ayush Mhatre provided a valuable second thrust with 59 from 36 balls, including three boundaries and four sixes, as CSK piled up 212/2 in their 20 overs. In the chase, Pathum Nissanka gave DC a bright start with 41 off 24 balls, laced with five fours and two sixes, and he combined with KL Rahul to forge a 62-run stand. Tristan Stubbs then steadied the innings with a determined 60 off 30 balls, but DC’s batting support largely fell away after that.

With wickets coming at regular intervals, CSK’s bowlers ensured the chase never gained real momentum. Overton struck with figures of 4/18, while Kamboj chipped in with 3/35, dismantling DC’s middle and late overs and sealing CSK’s long-awaited home success.

In the points table, CSK sit ninth after securing their first win of the season—one victory and three defeats. DC, meanwhile, are positioned fourth with two wins and two losses.
