Sanju Samson’s long wait for his next defining IPL innings ended in dramatic fashion as Chennai Super Kings secured a 23-run win over Delhi Capitals on Saturday. After early struggles that saw him contribute just 6, 7 and 9 in the opening three matches, the CSK opener delivered a Man of the Match display to silence critics and lift his team to a commanding total.
Samson’s turnaround after a shaky start
CSK’s campaign had not begun smoothly for Samson, and the pressure only intensified when his early scores came alongside CSK defeats. This time, though, the India T20 World Cup hero looked completely in control from the first ball, setting the tone with aggressive intent and calm execution.
- Samson raced to 45 not out off 19 balls within the opening six overs.
- He reached his half-century in 26 deliveries, then sustained the tempo without losing momentum.
- In the 11th over, he struck T Natarajan for a six and followed it with a single as CSK crossed the 100-run mark.
How CSK built 212/2 with partnerships and acceleration
The innings stood out not just for its speed, but for how Samson managed the innings structure. He partnered effectively with No. 3 batter Ayush Mhatre, taking on the anchor role at key moments while still finding boundaries when the bowlers erred.
- Samson took charge in the middle overs and completed his hundred off 52 balls.
- He struck Natarajan for a four as his century unfolded.
- His finishing flourish left him unbeaten on 115 not out off 56 balls.
- The knock included 15 fours and four maximums, at a strike rate of 205.36.
With Samson’s innings providing the backbone, CSK posted 212/2 in their 20 overs, putting Delhi under immediate pressure in the chase.
CSK’s bowling does the job as DC fall short
Chasing 213, Delhi Capitals were unable to build sustained partnerships and were dismissed for 189 in 20 overs. Tristan Stubbs made a bid to revive the chase with a 60, but the required support never arrived, leaving CSK to close out the win.
- DC were all out for 189 in 20 overs while chasing 213.
- Tristan Stubbs top-scored with 60, but the chase stalled behind him.
For Chennai, the wickets came at crucial times. Jamie Overton led the way with a four-wicket haul, while Anshul Kamboj chipped in with three dismissals to ensure Delhi never got momentum.
- Jamie Overton took four wickets for CSK.
- Anshul Kamboj claimed three wickets.
Eric Simmons compares Samson to MS Dhoni; Samson speaks on CSK faith
The impact of Samson’s innings drew praise beyond the scoreboard. CSK bowling coach Eric Simmons, who had earlier drawn comparisons between Samson and MS Dhoni after the match, highlighted the temperament that has shaped both batters’ careers.
Speaking after the win, Simmons said, “I’ve been privileged to spend many years playing and being involved with MS Dhoni, who is one of the calmest cricketers I’ve ever come across, and Sanju Samson is not far behind him. He understands the game from that perspective.” He added, “I’ve seen no panic, no sense of desperation. It’s just the way the game goes sometimes. You just have to keep trusting and believing in your quality, and he certainly has that in abundance.”
Samson, for his part, credited CSK for the backing they showed him and explained that he felt a responsibility to respond after a tough start to the tournament. He said: “Yeah, really means a lot, I think. To be very honest. I think the trust they showed in me… I think it was very responsible kind of a feeling that I need to put in a show. I need to stand up and say, okay, we are still in the tournament. And luckily everything came off very nicely.”
He also reflected on the comfort of his surroundings, noting that the environment helped him stay settled even after CSK had lost three games in a row. “It’s not easy to start off the tournament like this in a different franchise, but it never felt like it’s a different franchise,” he said. “I think it’s like coming to another home. I think people are so sweet, so nice. And everyone is so calm and relaxed. Even losing three games in a row, we just had a meeting of 50 seconds today. I think that shows how relaxed the franchise is and that really connects with the person I am. So I think very happy to be here,” he added.
