Pathirana Fit for KKR vs CSK After Fitness Clearance, Big Boost Ahead

Three-time IPL champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have been handed a significant pre-series lift ahead of their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 meeting with five-time title winners Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Tuesday. Fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana has reportedly cleared his fitness check, received a no-objection clearance from Sri Lanka’s cricket authorities, and is expected to travel to India to rejoin KKR. Pathirana was snapped up by KKR for a substantial 18 crore in the IPL 2026 Auction, but his early availability had been thrown into doubt following a left-leg problem picked up during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

Pathirana’s fitness update and travel clearance

After being managed through the recovery process, Pathirana is now believed to be fit enough to make the trip to India and link up with his IPL franchise. His return route has been helped by the clearance from the Sri Lankan board, clearing the way for him to travel and rejoin KKR’s setup.

There had been uncertainty about his participation after the left-leg injury during the T20 World Cup 2026. In that tournament, he managed only four deliveries against Australia before having to leave the field.

With his rehabilitation progressing, he is expected to arrive and join KKR in India around April 17. That is also the day of KKR’s next fixture against Gujarat Titans.

Which matches Pathirana is expected to miss

  • Pathirana is likely to be absent for KKR’s clash with CSK on April 14.
  • He is also expected to miss the game against Gujarat Titans on April 17.
  • Selection availability is expected to begin from KKR’s following match on April 19, when they play Rajasthan Royals (RR) at home.

Why KKR will welcome him: IPL record and role at death

Pathirana brings a proven IPL background to the KKR attack. He previously represented Chennai Super Kings (CSK), where he claimed 47 wickets across 32 appearances and played a part in CSK’s 2023 title-winning campaign.

KKR’s bowling unit has been searching for consistency, and Pathirana’s experience—particularly in the late overs—could provide a meaningful boost. That need is even sharper given that KKR have been dealing with injuries to key pacers.

KKR’s season struggles and early bowling setbacks

KKR have endured a difficult start to their IPL 2026 campaign. Their opening phase included a six-wicket loss to Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium. Returning to home conditions, they then suffered a heavy 65-run defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

In their third match against Punjab Kings, play was washed out due to rain, allowing KKR to collect a solidarity point. However, their most recent outing delivered a major jolt as they were beaten by Lucknow Super Giants in a shock result—leaving them with only one point from four matches.

Concerns have also grown even before the tournament fully got underway, as KKR lost Bangladeshi quick Mustafizur Rahman when the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) asked the franchise to release him from the squad. Adding to their problems, leading pacer Harshit Rana was also ruled out because of injury.
