Gujarat Titans skipper Shubman Gill has added another IPL milestone to his fast-growing list of achievements, becoming the youngest batter to reach 4,000 runs in the league. The landmark was reached during his innings against Lucknow Super Giants at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium on Sunday, when he crossed the 4,000-run threshold by hitting his 25th run of the knock.
Gill’s 4,000-run journey
- Gill broke into the 4,000-run club while batting against Lucknow Super Giants at Ekana Stadium on Sunday.
- He went past the milestone with his 25th run in the innings.
- The feat arrived in 118 IPL matches (innings), making him the second-quickest Indian to 4,000 league runs.
- KL Rahul remains ahead of him on speed, having reached 4,000 in 105 innings.
- Among all players, only Chris Gayle (112 innings), David Warner (114 innings), and Jos Buttler (116 innings) have reached 4,000 IPL runs quicker than Gill, alongside Rahul.
The record also places Gill at the top of the “youngest to 4,000 IPL runs” list. His age at the time of the achievement was 26 years and 216 days, ahead of Virat Kohli (27 years and 195 days), Sanju Samson (29 years and 147 days), and Suresh Raina (29 years and 174 days).
Consistency behind the numbers
Gill’s rise has been powered by steady returns with the bat. As an opener, he has held an average close to 40 while operating at a strike rate around 140 throughout his IPL career so far. He began his IPL journey with Kolkata Knight Riders in 2018, spending four seasons with the franchise and accumulating 1,417 runs across 58 matches.
His switch to Gujarat Titans ahead of the 2022 season has been a major catalyst for his growth. Since joining the Titans, Gill has scored more than 2,580 runs in 63 appearances, maintaining an average above 46 and striking at nearly 150. Since the start of the 2022 edition, no batter has put up more runs than him in the IPL.
Now leading the side, Gill’s tally of big scores continues to build as well. He has registered 27 half-centuries and four centuries in the tournament, with 17 of those fifties coming during Gujarat’s title-winning 2022 campaign. Importantly, all four of his IPL centuries have also been scored for the 2022 champions.
Earlier this season: another Gujarat milestone
Even before the 4,000-run landmark, Gill had reached another significant benchmark this season. At 26 years of age, he became the first player to score 2,500 IPL runs for Gujarat Titans. He reached the mark in a match against Delhi Capitals, getting there with a boundary off Axar Patel in the seventh over.
