Overton Strikes Again at Chepauk as CSK Roar Back to Winning Ways

Jamie Overton capped off a spell that had Chepauk roaring in celebration. By the time he finished his fourth—and final—fist pump to confirm Tristan Stubbs’ dismissal on Saturday, more than 32,000 fans were on their feet, chanting and cheering for the Chennai Super Kings bowler. Supporters stationed along the straight boundary even broke into a sing-song message: “Belated Happy Birthday, Ooooooverton!” A day after turning 32, Overton stepped into the spotlight as CSK’s latest match-winner and delivered the kind of winning rhythm that fans crave at home.

The triumph also snapped a tough run of six consecutive defeats at their own venue, a stretch that had carried over from IPL 2025. Using a blend of hard lengths and pace that reached 145 kph, Overton disrupted Delhi Capitals’ middle order and gave the CSK attack a clear edge. On a pitch that played fairly flat, with totals of 212 and 189 showing the scoring potential, he returned figures of 4-0-18-4—an impact spell that changed the tone of the game.

That temperament may matter even more on Tuesday, when CSK face Kolkata Knight Riders. KKR’s batting unit has struggled against the short-of-a-good-length style, especially when the ball arrives quickly and forces batters to commit early. Since 2020, Rinku Singh has managed only a strike rate of 138.86 against this length in T20 cricket, while Rovman Powell’s numbers are even more discouraging at 125.58 in the same period.

While Stubbs’ wicket ignited the stadium, it was David Miller’s dismissal that most clearly underlined Overton’s craft. He made full use of his imposing 6-foot-5 frame, hammering the ball on a demanding length and getting it to come back sharply near the stumps. Miller had looked to create space by stepping away and manufacturing room for his swing, but the combination of the awkward bounce and the ball’s inward movement cramped him. At the heart of it, though, was pace: Overton simply got there faster than Miller could time the shot.

The speed gun registered 145.2 kph, and the ball zipped through Miller’s vision before he could bring his bat down with any real certainty. When Miller turned to check the damage to his stumps, his expression read like disbelief—one that could easily become a viral moment.

It was also a striking turnaround across just six days. On April 5, Overton found himself trending for the opposite reason after he repeatedly missed the yorker from around the wicket to Tim David, ultimately conceding four sixes in a 30-run penultimate over at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. From that rollercoaster to this clinical display, the contrast showed how quickly T20 fortunes can swing.

Back at Chepauk, on a bouncier surface with red-soil characteristics, CSK’s plan looked different—and Overton executed it with near precision. Only one of the 24 deliveries he bowled was fuller than a good length. The rest were either short or just shy of a good length, keeping the batters guessing and denying them comfortable hitting zones.

CSK bowling coach Eric Simons highlighted how Overton leaned into what he does best. Speaking about the approach, he noted that Overton had tried something that didn’t quite work in the Royal Challengers Bengaluru game, but against Delhi he went back to his strengths, especially the hard length. Simons also pointed out that the bowler’s work on off-pace deliveries adds another layer at high speeds; when a ball is bowled around 150 kph and the off-pace option drops under 120 kph, the change can be especially disruptive. He added that the aim is to create as many mental questions as possible for the batter, citing how even Lungi Ngidi’s off-pace ball shapes a batsman’s mindset. In Simons’ view, Overton stuck to those core ideas—hard length first, and then yorkers when the moment demanded them—while stressing that the lines bowled to batters like David Miller are discussed constantly in training.

Overton’s appeal extends beyond this single performance. He is quicker than his twin brother Craig and can also provide a power burst in the lower-middle order. He has even managed to dismiss Craig and Josh Davey in the same county innings, underlining that his competitive edge shows up in different formats. Those T20 traits naturally draw franchise interest, and his career path has reflected that.

In 2021, he moved to the Abu Dhabi T10 League and topped the wicket-taking charts. He then made noise in the Big Bash League, where Adelaide Strikers initially viewed him more as a batter than a bowler. During the 2024-25 BBL season, Overton became the tournament’s MVP, scoring 191 runs across nine innings at an average of 95.50 and a strike rate of 156.55, while also taking 11 wickets. His hitting has carried into the Hundred as well, where Manchester Originals team-mates jokingly referred to him as “Dre Russ,” and now he has brought that same attention to CSK in the IPL.

Whether the comparisons to other power-bowling all-rounders turn into something more serious remains to be seen. For now, one fact is clear: Overton has already won the Chepauk crowd’s imagination, and his impact has made him impossible to ignore.
