Tim David Fined After Level 1 Breach vs MI, Gets One Demerit Point

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) batter Tim David has received a sanction after an incident involving the match officials in his side’s win over Mumbai Indians (MI). David was fined 25% of his appearance fee and also handed one demerit point following a Level 1 breach of the conduct code.

In the league’s disciplinary update, the offence was linked to Article 2.4, which covers “disobeying an umpire’s instruction during a match.” The statement noted that the breach happened on two separate occasions.

The first episode came after 17.2 overs during RCB’s batting spell. After that stage, the on-field umpires replaced the ball, but the release said David wanted to inspect the replacement and did not return it despite being asked multiple times to do so.

Broadcast footage from the moment captured David looking closely at the newly changed ball and then tossing it and juggling it with his hand. Kannur Swaroopanand, one of the two umpires on the field for Sunday’s contest, was seen trying to prevent David from continuing to juggle the ball. Virender Sharma, the other on-field official, then stepped in to collect the ball.

The second incident occurred after 19.2 overs. The IPL’s statement said David again failed to hand over the ball to the umpires, which it described as a repeated lack of compliance with the officials’ instructions. The league also recorded that this was David’s first offence of the season. After the match, he accepted the decision handed down by the match referee.

In a separate ruling, MI captain Hardik Pandya was also penalised for a slow over-rate. This was MI’s first over-rate offence of the campaign, and Hardik received a fine of INR 12 lakh.

On the points side of things, RCB moved to third place after securing a win by 18 runs at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday. MI, meanwhile, sit eighth after three defeats in their first four matches.
