Rohit Sharma to undergo hamstring scans; IPL availability vs Punjab Kings in doubt

Rohit Sharma is set to undergo scans to gauge the seriousness of a hamstring injury. The findings will determine whether the Mumbai Indians captain can feature in the next game against Punjab Kings on Thursday, April 16.

Rohit, 38, walked off in the sixth over against Royal Challengers Bengaluru after feeling discomfort while batting. Before departing, he made 19 runs from 13 deliveries, striking two fours and a six, and he faced the second ball from Rasikh Salam in RCB’s final Powerplay over when the issue forced him to retire hurt.

During that over, the Mumbai Indians physio attended to Rohit before the next ball. A prolonged pause followed for treatment, and when play resumed, Rohit returned to face the second delivery—only to block it and then leave the field retired hurt. The exact extent of the hamstring injury will be known only once the scans are completed.

At this stage, there has been no fresh update beyond confirmation that Rohit is dealing with a hamstring issue. Speaking after the match, Sherfane Rutherford admitted he did not have clarity at the time. “I’m not entirely sure yet—maybe it’s a bit of a hamstring issue—but I can’t say for certain. I was in the dugout, so I don’t have much information on it,” he said at the post-match media interaction.

Rohit has had a productive start to the season, scoring 137 runs across four matches, including one half-century. On Sunday night, he looked set to continue his rhythm before the injury setback disrupted his innings and raised doubts over his short-term workload.

Kohli rests after ankle concern

There was also a separate fitness moment involving Virat Kohli. After RCB’s batting innings, Kohli was observed resting in the dressing room, and it was later shared that he was unable to take the field during the MI chase due to an ankle injury.

However, Krunal Pandya moved to calm concerns about the severity. After RCB’s 18-run win, Pandya said he had not spoken directly with the physio, but expected Kohli to be fine. “I mean, I have not spoken to the physio yet, but I think he’ll be fine,” he said.

Kohli had contributed earlier in the day, scoring a 38-ball fifty at a strike rate of 131.57. That figure was notably below his season strike rate of 162.73, but Pandya stressed that there was no issue in terms of intent or impact. “He has been striking at around 200 if you look at the last two or three games. At the end of the day, what matters is how we are playing as a unit. If we are able to put up 230–240, we will take that any day. If you look at his stats, he has been batting at a very good strike rate,” he added.
