Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Shortlisted for Ireland Tour as India Debut Looms

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, a 15-year-old who has quickly become one of the most talked-about names in Indian cricket, is now reportedly on the verge of another major step in his career. Reports indicate that he has been shortlisted for India’s upcoming tour of Ireland, putting him in contention for what could turn into his senior international debut.

Sooryavanshi is said to have been included among the pool of candidates for the Ireland tour, with multiple other prospects also being considered. The thinking within Indian cricket circles is that the selectors, working under the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee, are likely to lean towards a “second-string” group—an approach that would allow them to test the depth of India’s bench and see how emerging talent handles international conditions.

One report from the Indian cricket setup suggested that Vaibhav is in contention for the Ireland assignment and that his name has been shortlisted alongside many other players. The same write-up also points to him being considered not just for the Ireland series, but for the Zimbabwe tour later in the year as well.

Sooryavanshi’s push for senior selection is being driven by his early impact in franchise cricket. He has started the IPL 2026 season in striking fashion for Rajasthan Royals, notably smashing 78 off just 26 balls against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. He followed that momentum with a 52 off 17 deliveries versus Chennai Super Kings and then added a rapid 39 off 14 balls against Mumbai Indians. Those performances have sparked strong calls from former players and cricket analysts, who believe his form and temperament make a strong case for him to earn a national call-up.

The debate has also spilled into public praise from high-profile figures. IPL chairman Arun Dhumal, in comments shared on X, said Sooryavanshi deserves to become India’s youngest debutant, a feat that would put him ahead of records previously held by Sachin Tendulkar and Shafali Verma. Dhumal described the young batter’s display as remarkable and emphasized how rare it is to find such talent at such an early stage, arguing that Sooryavanshi’s name should be formally recorded as India’s youngest men’s debutant.

Support for the youngster’s promotion has not been limited to administrators. Former India internationals including Irfan Pathan and Anil Kumble have also suggested that Vaibhav looks ready to move up to the senior national team setup.

To understand why this potential milestone is drawing so much attention, it helps to look at existing standards. Sachin Tendulkar currently remains the youngest male player to represent India internationally, having made his debut at 16 years and 205 days. In the women’s game, Shafali Verma holds the national debut record for India at 15 years, seven months, and 27 days.

Following the Ireland series, India are also scheduled to tour England. That trip is set to include five T20Is and three ODIs, with action beginning on 1 July. For the England leg, the board is expected to work around the availability of senior players, with a likely plan to bring back established names to complement the touring group.
