Pakistan pace spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi has been fined by his PSL franchise, Lahore Qalandars, after a security-protocol breach was reported at the team hotel during the Pakistan Super League. The franchise imposed a penalty of PKR 1 million, calling the step “voluntary and proactive” to reinforce discipline and accountability, while also stating that it views the incident as the result of a misunderstanding rather than any intentional violation.
Lahore Qalandars’ fine and official response
Lahore Qalandars confirmed that Afridi has been charged PKR 1 million for his involvement in the matter. In a release, the franchise said it has also sent a formal, detailed reply—along with its observations—to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
The team’s statement highlighted appreciation for the work of security staff, stressing that their role is central to maintaining a safe and secure setting for players, team officials, and spectators. It further clarified that the franchise does not believe there was a deliberate attempt to break established procedures, while reiterating its respect for all security protocols.
How the hotel incident unfolded
While Lahore Qalandars’ statement did not name Zimbabwe batter Sikandar Raza, the wider controversy involves both overseas players and allegations of breaching team security rules at their hotel.
- Police said Shaheen Afridi and Sikandar Raza were found hosting four guests in Raza’s room on the eighth floor until 1:25 a.m.
- The guests were hosted despite warnings and after a refusal was issued.
- Police claimed a liaison officer first approached the PCB manager seeking permission for four relatives of Raza to visit his room.
- That request was declined because it did not align with the established security protocols.
- Police also reported that, notwithstanding the refusal, PCB and security personnel later observed that Shaheen and Raza escorted the four guests into Raza’s room around 11:05 p.m.
- The guests remained in the room until 1:25 a.m.
Escalation to PSL management and senior notice
Authorities moved the issue up the chain of command. Muhammad Faisal, DIG (Operations, Lahore), informed the PSL CEO about what he described as a serious violation of security measures.
The controversy has now fed into the ongoing debate around discipline and compliance during the tournament, with Lahore Qalandars taking disciplinary action against Afridi while the PCB and security personnel assess the alleged breach surrounding both players.
