Shreyas Iyer Fires 66 as PBKS Beat MI, Upping Pressure in IPL 2026

Shreyas Iyer delivered another standout performance for Punjab Kings in IPL 2026, striking 66 off just 35 balls to steer his side to victory over Mumbai Indians on Thursday. The win kept PBKS on an almost flawless run this season, with the franchise remaining unbeaten so far and only losing out on points when their match versus Kolkata Knight Riders was washed out.

Shreyas Iyer’s rise—and the captaincy debate around Suryakumar Yadav

  1. Shreyas has been the season’s headline-maker with 203 runs across five matches, but the conversation has gone beyond his batting.
  2. After India lifted the T20 World Cup in 2026, Suryakumar Yadav’s batting form has been a key talking point over the last year, and Shreyas has increasingly been viewed as the natural next option in the batting order and leadership picture.
  3. During the World Cup, the opening stand led by Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson drew plenty of praise, while Ishan Kishan also won over critics with his impact at No. 3.
  4. However, fans remained uneasy about Suryakumar’s output at No. 4, especially after a promising start where he scored an unbeaten fifty-plus score against the USA in the tournament opener.
  5. Once the competition progressed, his returns dropped sharply: he failed to register any score of 50 or more after that first game.
  6. Even though his team went on to win a second straight T20 World Cup, Suryakumar managed the 30-run mark on only three occasions, including a golden duck in the final against New Zealand.
  7. In contrast, Shreyas has looked like a dependable No. 4 batter for Punjab Kings over the past couple of seasons, reinforcing the argument that he can handle both responsibility and pressure in the shortest format.
  8. He initially batted at No. 3 earlier, but made room for Josh Inglis in 2025 by moving down the order, and this year he repeated the adjustment with Cooper Connelly placed ahead of him.
  9. Crucially, the role changes have not disrupted his production: he still finished last season with 604 runs.
  10. Beyond batting, Shreyas’s leadership credentials have also stood out—he played a major part in PBKS reaching their first IPL final in more than 11 years shortly after joining the franchise.
  11. His IPL captaincy record includes taking Delhi Capitals to the final in 2020, winning the title with Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024, and now steering an in-form Punjab Kings group.

Off the field, a recent report suggested that the Indian set-up is not fully settled on Suryakumar’s position as T20I captain and may reassess after the white-ball tour of England. A BCCI insider, speaking on condition of anonymity, highlighted that Suryakumar is currently leading the side, but stressed the need for consistent batting performances, adding that future discussions through 2028 could be driven primarily by performance.

With that backdrop, team management is expected to consider a longer-term captaincy option who can guide India through the next two T20 World Cups and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Shubman Gill has been out of favour in T20Is after not being selected for the World Cup, and Hardik Pandya has not been handed a leadership role in recent times. In that context, Shreyas Iyer is being seen as a serious candidate for the captaincy, given his success as both a batter and a skipper.
